Moving Perfect Gems?
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:40:45 pm »

I want to create a 'display case' for my 5 or so perfect gems that my jewelers have created... but large gem stockpiling ain't working, and you can't dump artifacts.

So... how do I move a perfect gem to a stone I want? can I?

Perfect Gems are considered Finished Goods, along with Large Gems.
The thing is, since Gems aren't buildings, having a dwarf see them won't generate a happy thought. They're more or less worthless. You could make a custom building that needs Gems to be built, but that's a bit of work.

I dont' care about the dwarf getting a happy thought - I'm just doing this for the hell of it. So I might have to create a 1x1 building that requires a large gem to build, then deconstruct it.

No, better:
Make the Gem Wall/Fortification/Floor/Up/Down Stairs/Ramp.
Then make it to where it only requires one large gem.
Then slowly work on building a room out of Perfect Gems.

Haven't really tried. I'll try and figure it out for you.

I don't think you can edit fortifications in the raws - so I got no idea.

You could add a reaction to make a boulder out of a gem. Then build with that?

I already got da gems... but what would I 'build' with that?

I got another idea, how about making a quern with a reaction that requires a large gem as a reagent, then preserves the reagent, and has no output?

I just tried that, but it seems a reaction without a output crashes the game...

Ok I tried to take a stab at making a quern reaction that moves a large gem to a location... but when I look at a Quern, I don't see the reaction listed, not even in red:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:MOVE_GEM]
[NAME:move gem]
[BUILDING:QUERN:CUSTOM_G]
[BUILDING:MILLSTONE:CUSTOM_G]
[REAGENT:gem:1:GEM:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[PRESERVE_REAGENT]
[PRODUCT:1:1:STONE:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:SILTSTONE]
[SKILL:MASONRY]

You can't make custom reactions at querns or millstones.  You can't add reactions to existing worlds, so this wouldn't do you any good even if it worked.

It sounds like what you want to do is add in the display case workshop mod, which would let you build a building based around your perfect gem anywhere in the fortress.  But you can't add buildings to existing worlds, so you'll need a world regen.

Why would you make a reaction to move something? Especially an artifact, since you can't use artifacts in reactions (AFAIK).

You can't make custom reactions at querns or millstones.

My glassmaking industry on a sandless map begs to differ. I modded in custom reactions just fine:

Also, for the OP, here is the display case mod I use (credit goes to someone else (not sure who)):
