Help about organizing a defense
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:52:41 am »

Hi all,
i think i need some help on organizing my new fortress defense...

I embarked on a map where i should have found ore and flux, at the moment no flux, but there is abundancy of magnetite.

I am beginning the 2nd year ( i think ) of the fortress , now i have a stable production of food ( eggs and plump helmets ) and about 14-20 dwarves.

I have the following workshops:
  • mason
  • carpenter
  • jeweler
  • crafts
  • mechanic
  • still
  • kitchen

since at the moment i have absolutely no flux, i cannot produce iron.
i have no idea about what to do now :|

what is the best thing to do in these circumstances?

You can make iron fine without flux. Its steel you will struggle with.

Well, first of all, about the iron/steel question:

Secondly,
what kind of defence should i start with? swords/armours? traps with spikes? ninjas?

i read the article on the wiki, but still don't understand which solution is best...

That depends on how much blood you want to spill and what mods you are using.

Do you have fuel? Charcoal or coke(raw lignite and bituminous coal will not count as fuel) are necessary for smelting and forging
If not build a wood furnace and burn some wood( If you have lignite and bituminous coal you can then make  units of coke from 1 unit of fuel)
As for defence, if your in year two I recommend  weapon traps and at least a squad of three minute men.

Are you on pause? It takes the game a while to reconize if you have charcoal.

If you have a single, long hallway into the fort proper, stone fall traps are easy enough.  Just requires a mechanics workshop, a mechanic and two stone per trap.

no, it's because i'm an idiot :|

i confused hematite with magnetite, wich was on the second page of the list...
so yes, i can smelt magnetite to create iron!

my fortress has a great hall after the entrance, wich i want to fill with traps. i also plan to make it floodable in a few years (but not yet). wich traps are the best to use? i read that stone trap often do not kill intruders

A popular defense is the dodge this trap. In which you channel out the sides of your entrance tunnel (bridges will be down during times of peace) and place weapon traps filled with the weapon of your choice along the middle. The idea is when enemies come they dodge the weapon traps and fall down the channels  to their death several z- lvls below.

....They just refuse to stay down unless butchered, in which case their skins will haunt you until you subdue and tan them. Never has legendary butcher and legendary tanner seemed so valueable as in this release.

Usually, when I lack iron and flux, I put up a lot of cages traps.

Plus, I make enough glass trap weapons to cover two rows behind the cages.

That, combined to a cat in glass tower near entrance to detect ennemies, and so far I only loose some dwarves that detect enemies while transporting wood.

Best early defense is 1 way in/1 way out which can be sealed with a drawbridge. Airlock system of 2 drawbridges is even better. They are at each end of a narrow tunnel, lines with traps, and possibly a animal guard tower to detect ambushers. Plus chained war animals near the interior  bridge to scare off thieves, and babysnatchers. There is also a trick to using a pressure plates, that if stepped on, bridge raises automatically, and you can control when it lowers.
