Dwarf Fortress geology project
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:33:05 am »

Haya guys.
I guess some of you might identify with this.

Over the past few years of playing DF I have developed quite an interest in geology, mineralogy and metallurgy. I have therefore decided that it might be a fun, interesting and educational project to go out and try and collect samples of all the rocks and minerals featured in DF. The very mention of galena, hematite and obsidian makes me think to how I can best use these resources :P

Has anyone ever tried anything like this before?
Is anyone interested in this kind of project?

Oh yes, i've just begun studying geology at the university, and i've already seen quite a few rocks that are featured in DF (MICROCLINE OH YEAH). One day, i shall start collecting them myself, if not just take pictures of them. Sadly, Denmark consists overwhelmingly of sedimentary rocks, so i'll have to do some travelling and/or online shopping to find all the cool stones. :P

Luckly enough I live in the UK and can travel down to Devon and Cornwall which have quite a number of interesting mineral deposits.
No idea how I will tacle native gold, silver and platinum though D:

Were your geology studies inspored by DF?

Kind of. I've always been interested in geology, i just happened to be reminded of it partly by DF. It has, however, made me seriously consider going for vulcanology once i get my bachelor. :P

Also, internet stores. I bet you can find an awful lot of minerals there, though anything above native copper will probably cost you half a liver per piece. But hey, your liver can regenerate!

You might want to give pitchblende a miss two, to avoid official people asking very pointed questions about your search for uranium ore.

For the ones you do get, be sure to post pictures to the wiki.

all the rocks and minerals featured in DF.
That could take a while.
Sounds like an interesting... project? hobby?
I've always wanted to have a piece of microcline furniture, so I could see it from my dwarves' view. I don't think they make that, though.
Collecting all of the stones could be relatively easy. Ores could be expensive. Gems would definitely be something you'd have to invest a lot in. (Time and money.)
All the same, best of luck to you! Sounds fun!

Oh, and avoid the adamantine. Too risky.

I guess that could technically be covered by diamond or gelana since "Adamantine" is a rating of luster, the highest in fact.

And yes, there are a lot, mainly gems.

Sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm not a geologist myself, but I know a few. Hiking with geologists is an interesting time; my sister once took us about 2 miles off a path so she could look for some sort of interesting rock outcropping she'd heard about. And you get challenged to identify what kind of rocks are used in concrete mixtures a lot. But I digress...

Finding them all might take some traveling, though. I know a place where you can find native copper just by walking around, but apart from that?

Good luck on your venture!

Oh, and aren't gold nuggets found in rivers basically eroded  pieces of native gold? Go prospectin'!

That's funny, people getting into geology because of DF.  I got into DF because of geology.

The after action reporter tutorial chapter on magma is what did it.  Did want.

Let's see, I have:

I've always wanted to have a piece of microcline furniture, so I could see it from my dwarves' view. I don't think they make that, though.
I looked microcline up on Wikipedia, realised that in real life it's actually very attractive and started mining out as much as I could find. An entire chair carved out of it would probably be worth a small fortune.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Microcline actually comes in a variety of colors, and green/teal is one of the rarer varieties, called amazonite. Would be awesome to see a chair made of the stuff though. :P

Jesus I had an entire fort built of microcline. I got sick of the sight of the stuff.
