3d visualization for mac?
« on: August 28, 2011, 08:14:22 am »

Hey good folks!  I did some searching on this topic, but the results were hard to interpret.  I'd just like to know if there's a 3d fortress visualization utility for Mac.  Any help in this direction is appreciated.

I could also add that I'm a programmer and could potentially help a project...

Could you use some Mac compiling tools to compile stonesense from source for OSX? I haven't tried, since I use Linux on my mac now, but OSX is still there so I could check...

Ah, Stonesense is open-source?  Whelp, there's nothing to lose in trying.  I was hoping for something slightly more awesome-looking, but Stonesense would be great!  I'll report back when I have something to report :)

Ok, so I've been trying for a bit now, and it's at least quite difficult to get working.  Stonesense uses something called Allegro, which isn't really supported on OSX but should work.  Then there's DfHack, which I haven't even looked at yet.  I might try some more later just for kicks, but I can't promise that I won't be lazy and just use my wife's Windows box ;D.

It turns out that my wife's old XP box is incapable of running Stonesense.  At least, I tried and failed, and the official SS thread has a few posts portraying similar situations. Ah well, back to Unix-like systems where problems can be fixed with sufficient elbow-grease.

I've started following the instructions for Linux found here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=43260.msg2328595#msg2328595 .

They seem promising, but it's late and I'm going on a 4-day visit to Norway, after which I need to write and submit a conference paper.  *sigh* If anyone else has any success while I'm away and avoiding all things DF-related, please post here :) Otherwise, check back here in a couple of weeks and I'm sure to have cracked it.

Optimism has turned to pessimism. The reason is DFHack, which is essential for Stonesense, yet does not run on OSX.  Some people have worked on it, but to get it running is an entire project in itself... and there's a new version of DF coming soon.
