Digging up ramps, unable to reach next z-level
« on: November 28, 2007, 10:56:00 am »

I've run across this a number of times.  If I start off on a lower z-level and dig upward ramps, I'm unable to mine the z-level right above where my ramps lead.  Digging an up/down stairway lets me access the next z-level just fine and continue on with my mining, and the ramps otherwise appear to behave normally afterwards.  It's

Digging downward ramps, from an upper z-level to a lower one, seem to work fine and I'm able to mine the area right next to the ramps without issue.

It's a tricky bit to understand. Ramps need both an empty space and a wall on an above layer to work. If you dig an up ramp to a layer above, you essentially make a slope leading into the ceiling. For the ramp to work, some stone needs to be mined out there, and AFAIK that isn't possible currently, because dwarves won't mine up spaces. Staircases are the only option for going up. You can then destroy the stair and dig a ramp instead, if you need it, say, for wagons.

Oh, I understand it just fine (though digging a ramp out carves out an open space on both z-levels where it appears, so it looks like the dwarves *should* be able to access the upper z-level, but can't).  Just thought I'd report it as a formal bug, since it seems like you should be able to continue digging upwards on a ramp without needing to carve out a stairway to access the next level up.  At the very least, you should be able to designate a downward ramp on the next z-level similar to how stairways work.

I agree. This is annoying. Dwarves should be able to stand on ramps.

It's a bit of a hassle, but if you really want to use a ramp, you can dig two ramps in a row along the line you are digging, remove the second ramp, and then build a wall there.  That gives your dwarves a space to stand on at the top of the ramp and allows them to continue mining.

I'm guessing that the bug (if it is one) has to do with the ramp being a construction on the lower level that allows passage to the higher level.  This means that when a dwarf is standing on it, he is on the lower level, and can't reach the higher level.

I don't really think this is a bug... the top of a ramp simply doesn't exist. The arrow is just to let you know there's one on the lower level.

On a slightly related topic, I've noticed that in adventure mode, you can only go down ramps from the left (west) side, and to go up a ramp, you have to walk into it from the right (east) side.  Has anyone tried digging to the left (west) from the top of the ramp?  It could just be that this is another manifestation of the same problem.
