I need help on Everything
« on: August 27, 2011, 04:03:31 pm »

Hullo, everyone. I'm in great need of help on the Dwarf Fortress mode. I really can't do anything besides making useless buildings. I can barely harvest supplies and I think I've trapped most of my dwarves in a my buildings, which are without doors.

Please help.

I support this claim, furthermore it wouldn't hurt to have a look at these.

Well you've already masterted the art of making useless buildings, so there's something you're good at. Truly there is no greater goal then making a whole lot of useless buildings.

Anyway, everything is a lot to need help with, your best bet is to consult the wiki (mentioned the post above), follow a tutorial if you're new to the game or ask a more specific question.

But these buildings I asume they are rooms you dug out? Not sure how you could trap your dwarves in there unless you had a way in and removed it. It's hard to say without any more information.
Off the top of my head the problems I can picture could be solved by things like removing a wall you built with the remove construction designation, building a new staircase or carving out a new one, building a wall next to a ramp you may have been using and lastly building a brdige or floor over any gaps you may have unintentionally made at an acces point.

It's easy to trap your dwarves in a bowyer's shop or a jeweler's shop if you don't understand what the dark-green and light-green Xs mean on the template.

Code: [Select]
#####
#xxX##
#xxX..
#xxX##
#####

Jeweler's shop built wrong.  The capital Xs are the dark green ones, which are impassable.  You cannot build a jeweler's shop with the door on the east, because the east wall is solid.

They were just... Buildings. I think they built the last wall when they were inside the building.

Just buildings? Are you talking about a Workshop, or did you define a room? If its a building, go ahead and use Q, hover over the building, and press x to deconstruct. Also, follow the links given to you, or look up captnduck on youtube.

The common dwarf likes to stand north or west of a construction (for instance, a wall, "b-C-w") that he builds. Only if he can't stand in the north or in the west because there are already constructions or constructions ordered, he will accept that he can also stand east or south of that construction. He won't ever construct something diagonally.

Keep that in mind when you designate your constructions, or they will wall themselves in indeed, and all the time.

A good way to keep the little retards alive is to designate and suspend constructions west and north of your walls if there's the remote possibility that the dwarf will wall himself in.

This here, for instance, is a deathtrap for your mason:

###
#@#
#W#
#_#
#_#

_ = floor
# = natural wall
W = wall in construction
@ = the mason, constructing the wall

So, change it to this:

###
#w#
#W#
#@#
#_#

w = a dummy wall construction ordered by you and suspended immediately

I think I understand. Were you manually assembling buildings outside?

When you start off, it's usually easiest to dig tunnels and rooms out of the ground. The confusion came from the fact that there's a menu for placing 'buildings' in the game already (but they're usually things like statues and tables).

Also, if you were using wood, I'd recommend making things from stone instead because you can get much more of it at the start if you dig down a bit (do you understand z-levels yet?).

d>n to remove the constructed walls. That will let them get out.

Z-levels? I don't even know how to dig for stones.

Use the (d) menu to designate spots for digging.  Pick a spot on the ground, and designate a down staircase there.  Then press > to go down one Z-level and designate an up/down staircase directly below the down staircase.  One of your miners should come along and dig these out, assuming you have a miner and at least one pick-axe.  If your up/down staircase is surrounded by soil (sand, clay, loam, peat, etc.) then keep going downward, using more up/down staircases to extend the vertical stairwell as far down as you wish, until you hit a stone layer.  Then you can use (d) (d) to designate normal tunnels to be dug, leading away from the stairwell.

OK. Do you mean you don't know how to dig, or you just haven't found any stone yet?

If the former, you can dig by finding a block bordering a black area of the map which is described as a wall when you look at it by pressing k. Press 'd' to open the designations menu (You probably already did that for the wood for the houses) and 'd' again to select Dig. Draw a rectangle by placing two opposite corners of it starting on the wall square and extending into the darkness. A yellow box will appear there and a dorf will come along and start to dig where you marked.

If you just haven't found stone, you need to master the third dimension. You can go down a level by pressing '>' on your keyboard (usually shift + '.'). You probably won't see much because it's all underground and therefore not visible. Go up by pressing '<'. You're now looking at all the objects one block above the ground. Again, there's probably not much there.

To move your dwarves down, use 'd'esignate again to mark the space for a Down Staircase on the ground (a 1x1 rectangle). Now, keep the cursor directly where it is, go down a level (>), and put an Up Staircase in the dark space below it. (Every staircase has to connect to another staircase to be usable. Up/Down staircases are confusing at first, but they're just like having one of each in the same space.) Your dwarf should come along and mine out these blocks again. Now you can mine out the blocks around the lower staircase. Hurrah!

You can use an Up/Down staircase in place of an Up Staircase if you want to be able to go down through that square to get even lower. You should find stone about 4-5 levels down. If the stone starts pissing water all over your miners, abandon and start a new fortress, because you've found an (almost) impassable aquifer.

Hopefully, that's all understandable...
