Turn 51: Little of note occurs, save for the alien Behemoth dissapearing. Heres hoping we do not see its like again for a long time.

Turn 52

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A new intersystem engine is nearing completion. Whilst faster than our nuclear enginges, it is big and bulky so of little use on our small cutter hulls if we wish for any room to be left for weaponary.

Next turn our mining wolrds will be able to implement deep extraction methods, increasing potential mineral output by 50% - this should put an end to our crippling mineral shortages.

One less enemy spy to worry about is a good thing. No doubt it was an agent in the control of the Harvesters.

The unrest on Endymon is caused by unemployment. No doubt as infrastructure gets built this will cease to be a problem.

Indu San VII is now a full colony - The Bulrathii built thier main settlement in a region containing vast reserves of water, and named it accordingly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This dense atmosphered and cool planet suits them well, and they are under orders to mine its mineral wealth - minerals we so desperatley need.

Turn 53

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have made contact with 2 new alien empires. Firstly we finally got a response from the Gogannm. It is clear to see why they took a while to respond. The Gogannm are a geodic lifeform, silicon based. Our diplomats have taken to referring to them as the Silicoids, for obvious reasons.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The hot world that is thier homewolrd has allowed a radically different life mechanism to evolve. They "eat" minerals, and use the chemical elements ingested to grow - to grow exactly what is not clear, as there appears to be little in the way of obvious sensory apparatus, but careful observation of a silicoid shows that it does react to external stimuli, but in a very slow manner. Stanging at around 2 to 3 meters tall, it might take one half an hour to traverse a standard sized room through growing and reabsorbing appendages. As a result thier population growth and migration is also painfully slow. It goes witout saying that they are rather tough along with this slowness (One trooper was overheared to say "What weak points? Its a rock!"). They arent the most creative thinkers, presumably as when dynamism is so difficult it isnt worth the risk. Silicoid technology is centred around growing individuals to fit a role - thier ships are Siliciods that have been grown into that purpose. This is a remarkably efficient way of contructing machinery. It goes without saying that they are very good at mining. Thier language is based around colour and shape - far too slow for a human to interperate without speeding it up.

We are making efforts to establish good relationships with the Siliciods for now - we can not afford to have war on 2 fronts. I still fully intend to take thier outpost in the Sukra system if it proves to be sustainable. Thier home systems can be dealt with later.

Secondly, we now have diplomatic contact with the Oktoketx. They refer to thier species as the "Klackon", but showing a complete lack of originality our diplomats have gien them the monkier of "the Bugs".
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Klackon stand at 4 to 5 meters tall, but are slim and slender - testament to the hot, low gravity worlds they call home. These worlds are riddled with underground cities (properly hives), and they live under a strict caste system. We only have interaction with drones, but we are assured that each world has a Queen, warriors and millions of drone workers. Efficient miners and farmers, thier hive structure produces industiral output that is second to none. Thier populations grow at a spectacular rate, and as individuals they are fast and strong but lack intelligence. Thier technology isnt markedly different to our own, apart from the emphasis on hive-like structure in thier constructions. As with the Silicoids, Efforts are being made to co-exist peacefully with the Bugs. We can squash them later.

3 more worlds have come under our control.

Zona II, henceforth known as Stone. The rare gemstones abundant here have attracted people seeking thier fortune.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fahd V, now known as Archipelago. Other than being a place of great natural beauty, there is little of note here.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Biot VIII, named as Sky. Another unremarkable world.

Turn 54

A new spy is availiabe for assignment. Arbalest is to be inserted into the Bug home system with orders to aquire technology. They seem a softer touch for spying than the Harvesters.

Our diplomats report contact with an as of yet undetected race. We apparently have been sharing a border with the Raretho for some time but have been unaware of each other until now. The Raretho empire is composed of a species calling itself the Grendarl.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Standing at 8 to 9 feet tall, they are an impressivley built species, with some features resembling that of a lizard or reptile. They inhabit hot and humid terrestrial worlds, and have a rigid warrior based caste society. Whilst they make formidable warriors, they arent the smartest of races, and lack research skills and creativity. Efforts are being made to establish positive relations with the Grendarl as they would serve us better for now as allies rather than enemies.

The Brye Ehts have spread to thier 5th world. Cerapa 5 should serve as a useful population hub for them - its many massive underground caves could house many millions of thier strange forms.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Turn 55

Another unidentified behemoth has arrived in orbit above Lodestone. No effort was made to resist it and all ships kept way out of its way. This ship then bombared the surface with energy and plasma based weapons, destroying some infrastructure. There is little we can currently do about this - the ship is too fast and powerful for us to consider dirving away.

A minor probe from the Harvesters was made at the uninhabited system of Theta Lyr. The scout there retreated after sensor sweeps of the craft (which should prove very vulnerable to our own combat craft). Our first assault fleet has been formed under the Command of Sheb to take the war to thier territory. More fleets will follow.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

2 more colonies have been formed this turn.

Zona III, now known as Oak. An unremarkable forested world.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Naam V, now known as Blue. This world will be mined for its mineral wealth.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Turn 56

Arbalest has stolen "Advanced Policy Theory" from the bugs. This tech should allow for minor improvements to the activity of our govermnet DEA's.

This they didnt like...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was more intimidating in the original clicks and whistles that pass for insectile language.

So I have called away the ships picketing thier border. They can have those 2 systems for now - there is nothing there we need, or that we wont be able to take with force once the Harvesters have been dealth with.

Turn 57

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

4 Harvester ships are in orbit above Lodestone. Shebs task force will be ther shortly to deal with them. A huge ground force has been established there to welcome any invaders.

I would wager that it were the Harvesters who obtained the Mass Driver technology from us. This is pretty low key though - our Mass Drivers surpass the basic schematics that were stolen.

A number of trade agreements have been signed with the Bugs and the Grendarl - the revenues generated here will be diverted into military funding.

Turn 58 will be up later or tomorrow. It might take some time to play and prepare a post.

I do believe that this is the one case where I wont read the spoiler until later.

That almost never happens.

Okay, I have a quick question here. The downloadable version that you're talking about as being unmoddable is the Good Old Games version? I thought that didn't have any DRM on it.

If it isn't then I might just try it out to see if it can be modded.

So it does, the mod process looks like a pain to go through though. The heck are code patches?

Inspired by this thread, I tried installing, patching and modding MOO3 over the weekend. Specifically, installed, patched to 1.25, then installed the Chocolate 0.9.9 mod. Game launches fine, can go through the race selection screens with no problem. But then when it starts a new game, I wind up with a black screen with an error of "DirectX surface can not be loaded." I can hear the game music playing, so I think the game itself is running, it's just a graphics problem. Even tried in Win98/ME compatibility mode and have the same problem.

From what I dug up, it's a generic error created when the game tries to load some graphics resource that isn't there anymore. *sigh* Oh MOO3....you taunted me with your frustrating bugs and design the first time around, and now you return from the grave to taunt me once more....

The most common error for a DSXU error is an error in one of the spreadsheets telling the game to use or find something that isnt there - most commonly in techtables.txt - even a spelling mistake in the speadsheet can casue that, making it impossilbe for me to tell you exaclty what fix to try. The stock answer back in the day was to uninstall, reinstall, apply 1.25, check the game runs, back up the MoO3 folder, and apply mods afterwards. Try a fresh install then the mod package I have provided in page one of the thread.

Code patches are used by the "MoO3 patcher". They change the .exe file in some arcane way... someone actually used a hex editor and machine code to put the patcher and code patches together.

In other news, laptop upgrading and repair have delayed me playing further turns.

Yeah, the problem is that I have a digital copy, so mods generally aren't going to work. Although everything I read said that the Chocolate modpack had no-cd built in (which does seem to be true, as the game does launch), which is why I chose that one. *sigh*

Meh, I'll give it another shot in a day or two, and if I can't figure it out, I'll re-consign it to the scrapheap of history. Even just getting into the game setup menus, I was kinda appalled at the production values. It's bad when MOO2 looks like a newer (and higher budget) game.

Yea it was released unfinished basically - this is most apprent in the front end. The in game UI post mods is pretty good, considering where it started from in the unmodded game (dire, basically). The No-CD works with the CD install version only - the download version will not work with any of the community mods - Atari did something to the .exe that we couldnt figure out that made the digital download incomaptible with any of our work.
