Check orders (not labors) and make sure you have woodcutting/gathering enabled; make sure the trees you have designated for cutting are reachable; and try using normal battleaxes to cut the wood. If none of that works, make sure your...humans... aren't really elves in disguise.

perhaps your woodcutter was too small to wield the greataxe?

i've had a similar problem with goblins, and was assured greataxes worked for woodcutting, and was offered the explanation that the greataxe was too large to wield.

did your woodcutter actually equip the axe? was he "small for a human"?

i was under the impression (having not done the math) that humans were the right size overall to use greataxes.  perhapse the greataxe really can not be used for woodcutting?

Back in 40d, you had to go into the Military menu and set the wood cutters to "#:2" since great axes had to be wielded 2-handed. It's possible that wood cutters in 0.31 aren't capable of using 2-handed axes.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Out of curiosity, why did you try to use a greataxe instead of a battle axe for chopping wood?

Human immigrant woodcutters can come with greataxes.

Human starting profile or embark options can include a greataxe instead of battle axe.
