*we're an AI and we understand the concept, so it must be represented as data somewhere.

>Rebuild society
That sounds hard. but you add it to your directives, just in case.

>Say goodbye to friend computer and begin searching for other survivors.
>This doesn't look too nice... But our directives must be out here somewhere! Onwards! Look for something still-standing!

Onward! It's hard getting around though, your wheels getting caught on the rubble every few feet. You'll be here all day like this...

>Flee if you see anything scary.
Noted. Nothing scary out here though.

> adapt.exe(those bulkhead doors)

Nothing obvious happens for a moment, but soon your shell changes color, changing into the heavy alloy making up the door. Nice, but the extra weight slows you down a bit.

> adapt.exe(your grasping arm)

Your arm bends oddly the moment you run the program, before snapping back into place with an extra joint in it. It resembles a part of one of those schematics you downloaded now, and should be much more flexible.

> adapt.exe(the air)

Nothing happens. Either your sensors can't detect the change, or the program couldn't do anything with it.

> adapt.exe(the concept of recursion)

The program returns only a simple string: "Ow."

After that string of adaptations, a message starts blinking in the edge of your vision. "Memory and data sufficient for advancement. Proceed?"

>Proceed
You shut down instantly as you give the command, and ambient light levels when you reactivate seem to imply at least a few hours have passed. You are structurally the same, but the adapt.exe program has been modified heavily. You now have access to an entire menu of options when you run it, instead of the single parameter you were limited to. Lets see, what all options does this thing have...
>ADAPT
>1. TARGET(Accepts an array, not a single target)
>2. INTEGRATION POINT(Options are: Body, torso, head, arm, propulsion, hardware, input custom)
>3. INTEGRATION LEVEL(Options are: Modify, replace, merge)
>4. REVERT TO PREVIOUS

>ADAPT(target=grasper, iPoint=propulsion, iLevel=merge)
I have a better one
>ADAPT(target=Schematic_humanoid_robot_legs,ipoint=propulsion,ilevel=Replace)
Because lots of schematics of it were around and we saved them so one of them probably was one of the legs of a robot
>observe schematics
Most of them seem to be blueprints for the humanoid robot displayed on the screen. Others show a number of other robots, of varying design. One looks like a military design, essentially just a gun on wheels. Another appears to be some sort of spy-bot, a tiny flying machine with a massively complex sensor array. And another.... hey, it's you! And there's a large red x over the schematic... Says something about the project being scrapped.

>ADAPT(target=grasper, iPoint=propulsion, iLevel=merge)
Well, that didn't go so well. Sure, you have something that could be called legs now, but it's even more awkward than before. Like trying to walk on your hands.

>ADAPT(target=sensors, iPoint=input custom, iLevel=modify)
The program asks for a definition of the custom input you want as you select the second option. Not too sure what sort of format it wants there though...

>ADAPT(target=sensors, iPoint=arm, iLevel=modify)
Your drill-arm changes slightly, a few simple sensors appearing on it. Not exactly the most useful change, seeing as they will probably get shredded as soon as you turn the drill on...

>adapt.exe that schematic of the spy drone as a deployable tool
>survey the area with it
Hmm... while it might be possible to modify yourself to make the drone independent, you aren't sure how to do so. Gotta pick a body part to replace, and "not actually attached" isn't one of them.

>ADAPT(target=Schematic_humanoid_robot_legs,ipoint=propulsion,ilevel=Replace)
Ooh, that works much better. Each of your grasper-legs is quickly replaced by a smaller version of the legs from the humanoid robot you saw displayed, slightly modified for quadrupedal movement.

>Search for other vehicles
>Inspect surroundings
Your new legs, short as they are, are able to traverse the rubble much more easily, and you soon find your way onto a main road. All the surrounding buildings are just as badly damaged though, and there don't seem to be any vehicles around.
