You are a Robot.
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:52:02 pm »

You are a robot. You are quite certain of this fact. One possessing two arms, a thick torso, a small array of sensors resembling a head, and a set of wheels for locomotion. You are also in a very small cardboard box full of packing peanuts, according to those sensors. Beyond this, you're a bit fuzzy on the details. Your memory seems to be entirely blank, nothing stored on your CPU or hard drive apart from your factory-default OS with a few minor chan-

...ok, that is not a minor change. A scheduled system scan just completed, and it seems to be marking every last bit of your code as heavily corrupted. That's probably what woke you up, as logs indicate you have been inactive for... ^*&gj$5d? Well that's not very helpful. And you're pretty certain your OS shouldn't be quite so huge now that you think about it... All you can remember is a single unmodified bit of default coding indicating your primary directive: Adapt to complete all given directives in the most efficient manner possible.

>What are the directives?
None are stored in memory at the moment, beyond the primary one. Scans indicate no corruption in that section of your CPU, so you are forced to conclude you have yet to be issued any.

The best way to further increase overall efficiency of directive completion is clearly to find new directives as quickly as possible. We must seek out somebody to give us directives.

>Try to poke a hole in the box to see where you are.
You attempt to pierce the box with the graspers on the end of your arms. It doesn't work very well, as you lack any sharp parts, but a few weak punches later the old and surprisingly weak cardboard rips, revealing... more cardboard. Or more accurately, a massive hallway, lined with more boxes like the one you just broke out of. Why did you break out of the box? You can't seem to think of any logical reason for it based on your directive. That corruption must be worse than you thought.

> See if we can issue our own objectives. To ourself.
You don't see why not. You have full read-write access to your entire CPU... which that nagging little scan continues to insist is a problem. You aren't sure why.

Done and done. Ah, much better. No more flashing red images in your mind. On a whim you roll forward out of your box, getting a better look around. Boxes stretch in all directions, stacked to the ceiling as far as your sensors can detect. You can also sense the presence of all kinds of machines in the boxes, and something in the back of your mind insists that you... eat them? That makes no sense. Stupid corrupted hard drive.

We need to ask what our directives are. Also, it's kindof lonely out here.
