I get the off-hand as an answer (Too bad it's incorrect), and I like sunlight to Draignean's... It's that fright descends...

I'm not afraid of the dark, though.  :P
Fright descends, meaning theres less of... it..... (Get's it) Fuuuuu-

I'm guessing descends was used as it's a lovely word that rhymes with depends, and has the alternate meaning of "comes."

Yeah... I got it now... Such strange things impeed my progress sometimes... Like not even thinking from a different prospective on how a word might be used...

I'm not afraid of the dark, though.  :P

Not even the complete darkness that leaves you blind after prolonged exposure? There is a fine line between dark, and total lack of light.

Draignean,

Got it, though.  It's sunlight.  The "7 sons" is referring to a rainbow of 7 colors after a storm.

Dead on my friend.

It's that descending of fright that is getting me. How can we depend upon it, yet feel good that it's gone?

Err you're reading that phrase a little wrong, like descending shadows or descending spiders fear is one of those things that descends upon you.

Draignean,
Steam whistle is a very good answer, and closer than you would think...

Hmm, is it perhaps the call to rise (or whatever its called) on a military base?

Not fingernails, you don't need to give those life.... Giving life implies a voluntary action... Cell-phone?

You're getting colder; it is a physical object.

It is not a Cell-phone, though that is closer than a part of the body...

Frelock's:

whistle, tune, no words
not like a bird's song
always on time
will you hear my chime

Will you? implying you can ignore it, but it will still be there.
My first thought after aformentioned guesses, is an alarm, which may or may not also be a clock in itsself. But, the 'will you' leads me away from that and more towards something that isn't so in your face... It's hard to stick with a patternistic behavior in inanimate objects, but get away from the notion of clocks...

A stocks ticker?

No, the phrasing is you will not hear me chime early, and you will not hear me chime late.  Just another of the "on time" things.

I'd like to re-state that steam whistle was absurdly close.

A kettle perhaps?

On time not referring to a specific time but rather the interval between applied heat and a boiling reaction.

Precisely; the kettle will always whistle by the time it starts boiling.  Well done Draignean.

Skin maybe? There's lots of stuff on the other side of it, but it holds us inside, even though we still fuck about with what's outside.

I'm commonly found,
And quite well known
In fact, I'm all around
But when I'm alone
You won't see me change
and leave in a puff
It'll seem quite strange
But certainly hot enough

Now, the real question is this
Which words are there to rhyme
So you can safely miss
But hurry, someone else may not need much time

I suck at riddles, both solving and making them, but I wanted to contribute to this great thread, so here's this easy one...

For one a hat, for some a road,
for most an over-large window,
My whims affect one and all,
All things tremble when I roar.
What am I?

Now, I'll try and answer one...

I am small, but handy.
You use me, but not always.
I provide what you need,
so long as you give me life.

~or~

I hold the liquid life,
Many swarm my edges.
I bar your passage,
yet you still seek the other side.

Are these two for the same answer? I think it might be the mind, or brain cells or similiar, as it provides us what we need, as in thoughts and decisions, but only if we excercise it enough to stay sharp, and it can also be a limitation on our interactions with out surroundings, like in the second rhyme.

No they aren't the same answer, two very different things.

Symbiotes and Skin are not correct, none of the brain parts are correct.

The first allows you to see 'in the dark'
The second is generally considered very large

Air?  Put a bunch of air in space, and it will certainly leave in a puff.  And technically, if we look at the "temperature" of the inter-stellar medium, it's quite hot.  (It's "cold" to us because even if the average molecular speed is high, the amount of molecules is miniscule so nothing imparts its temperature onto a body, hence "cold" space)

The first allows you to see 'in the dark'
The second is generally considered very large

Flashlight and ocean?

It's not air, Frelock, but you're on the rightish track, just going parallel and a few feet to the side.

Ocean seems to be a good answer for the second one, maybe civilization for the first one? It's not a physical object, so size is zero, and it only exists when we use it.
