Hrm... the whistling is probably the thing. Yet it chimes...

A train?

I thinking about a train as well, but I don't know if it quite does it.

What about HIV specifically, for Barbarossa. Don't want to get it, but once you've got it, if you'd lose it, it'd qualify as AID's?
Or maybe the zombie virus? Once you've got it, you're no longer in able to reason that you want it gone.

Use the definition of chime like "to chime in"
I'll admit, that one was a stretch, but I couldn't think of another word rhyming with time to fit the situation.

And train is an excellent answer, though not the one I had in mind when I conceived of this.

Oh we're supposed to write our own? oops...

I now believe the first riddle to be an old truck (or similar vehicle) that is out of gas.  Reasoning: Its skin is steel and glass, its deadliness to the user is directly proportional to its speed, its voice is thunder (obvious, you ever hear those old girls rumble?), it's tongue is flame (Backfire and exhaust ignition), and its breath is death (old vehicles were notorious for carbon monoxide poisoning in enclosed spaces.), but for all of that is is out of gas and needs another gallon. (A nickel is of course a loooonngg gone price for gas.)

My own (Crappy) riddle...

Upon my power your life depends,
When I'm gone your fright descends.
After the heavens have roiled and torn,
from my own seven sons are born.

What am I?

The sun?  It gives power, night is usually associated with frightening occurrences, and after the sun was formed, there were seven planets (not counting Earth...or Pluto).

Never mind, if you count the planets associated with male gods, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, you get 7.  Hence 7 "sons"

I hadn't thought of HIV, but it fits perfectly. The answer I was going for was 'a lawsuit', but I'll give that one to you, Strife.

@Draignean - The Sun.

Sin.

No, I hadn't thought of that one though. :P

Close but not quite, unlike the sun this can be gone without for short periods of time without hideous effects. Hell life might even read better as "Life as we know it." but that throws the rhythm to hell.

I whistle a tune without any words
Though you can't mistake my call for a bird's
And like a clock, I'm always on time
Not early or late will you hear my chime

Steam whistle for a workyard comes to mind...

No. Cold. (As in the Hot Cold game, not that the answer itself is cold.)

Okay, things my life depends on the power of...

The Sun
Atoms
Mitochondria?
Heat?
Gravity?
Occasional Sunlight?
Oxygen?

Losing any one of those would frighten me.

The second part is a bit harder, though. Mitochondria don't dwell in the heavens, so they're out. None of them can have literal children, but perhaps oxygen could split into smaller pieces.

Oxygen?

One of those four non-crossed out, non oxygen answers is very fricken hot. Boiling even.

I'm a riddler by nature, I figure things out sporadically and without notice. This is the thread for me.
But drat. All that is riddled, has ben rung.

Scratch that it seems there is one with still no answer.

my power, life as we know it depends
gone, fright descends
heavens, roiled and torn
seven sons born

Hrm..... It's that descending of fright that is getting me. How can we depend upon it, yet feel good that it's gone? I could understand being scared of it's power that we use... And seven sons... I'm just gonna through some things out. Internet, Electricity, Steam Power, Gunpowder, Flight, Metals, Rock and Roll, Metal (genre)... I'm just so logical I produce too many answers to fit any perfectly... But ninja updates... Physics? General laws of relativity? Adrenaline!?

I am small, but handy.
You use me, but not always.
I provide what you need,
so long as you give me life.

~or~

I hold the liquid life,
Many swarm my edges.
I bar your passage,
yet you still seek the other side.

Draignean,
Steam whistle is a very good answer, and closer than you would think...

Also, I'm disappointed that sun wasn't it; I thought it was really clever with the whole male planet vs female planet.

Got it, though.  It's sunlight.  The "7 sons" is referring to a rainbow of 7 colors after a storm.

Also, Evergod, is the first one your left hand?
