Played quite a few rounds just now. Eventually you'll get a spot on a server, just keep trying throughout the game.
So, first things first. It's definitely a very early beta. Gameplay is still very clunky, and extremely laggy. This might be because they might be running the servers themselves - they're probably not pro servers... However, I haven't stopped laughing and getting excited!
Let me do a small review.
There are two teams, blue and red, of what look like dwarves or gnomes. Ships are identical, as far as I could see.
The ships are composed of the following:
- One bridge in the front, which contains guns/muskets and the captain controls.
- 4 or 5 cannon along each side along the ship
- 5 or 6 doors along each side of the ship
- Racks teeming with gunshot down the middle
You'll be mostly on your ship. One of the players gets to be the captain by using the captain's controls. He gets a big map showing his ship and the other ship, and he can use the WASD controls to steam ahead, steam backwards or turn left and right. These controls are sluggish, 'cause it's a ship and all, making captain combat very tactical!
Here's an "official FAQ":
E- Pickup item/load cannon/fire cannon/activate helm (if you're the captain)/revive fallen teammates
F- Drop item
LMB- Primary fire (punch/shoot rifle/heal player with medgun/repair wall with blowtorch)
RMB- Melee rifle
FAQ -How to Play
How do I choose a class?
Jump down the corresponding hole at the beginning of the game. "Every Man" is engineer, "Shall Do" is Captain, and "His Duty" is medic. The first person down the captain hole is the captain for the game, and only he can fly the ship/be invulnerable to shot/gas damage.
How does my team win?
By incapacitating all enemy players, including the captain.
How do I do that?
Regular crew members can be injured and incapacitated by being hit with cannon shot, which creates explosions and dangerous gas leaks in the ship. The captain can only be killed by small arms/melee (which essentially necessitates boarding combat).
How do you board?
Fire grapple shot at the enemy ship at close range. Grapple shot is placed around the main columns of the gun deck. When a grapple is successful, board the enemy ship by entering the corresponding breached wall next to the cannon that fired the grapple. Be sure to bring your guns!
In short, shoot at the enemy until you feel they've been adequately diminished by explosions/gas damage, and then board them when they're weak. But the enemy is also trying to do the same to you, so keep your ship in fighting condition by healing hurt teammates and fixing breached walls as well.
So basically, game starts, you fall down some hatch, making you whatever you are. If you're an engineer, you can repair the doors of the ship, if you're the captain you... well, captain, and if you're a medic you can heal people. Everyone can revive fallen comrades, though it takes a while. Essentially, you run around, grab shot, put it in cannon, and fire the cannon where appropriate, judging by the mini-map showing the ships. There's also three kind of cannon rounds: really fast, not-so-fast-but-I-guess-mode-damageful-if-that's-even-a-word, and the grapple shot.
If your ship gets hit, explosions take health away from whoever's close, so you want to ... not get hit. Some shots will damage the captain's controls, so that the ship immobilizes, and that's a great time to pound the enemy ship to smithereens, turn around, prepare grapple shot, go in close, grapple, grab guns and rush in for the last couple of kills!
If the captain organizes the players well by telling them to be ready to fire on left/right side... the other team better beware! Very nice, but definitely needs organization
Takes a while to build up a team that works, but once you do, you're hard to stop
