Note: If we choose Athens, I would recommend changing our culture to Greek as soon as possible, because your National culture is Italian, but your only province's Culture is Greek.

Can't you only change national culture through events?

No, I believe it is a National/Cultural decision in the expanisons. I renember changing my culture via decision.
Edit: And don't forget, you have to fast forward a few years before Athens becomes playable. I believe its only just at least 5-something years from the starting date. I'll try and get an exact date.
Edit2: Freedom of Athens is on January 1st, 1402. Only three years after the starting date, not a big change.

Oh come on now. I'm the only one who wants to see an EU3 game that's different from the same old overplayed nations? Vote Kongo!

Were not voting for that because:
Kongo would just be a while of uneventful buildup until suddenly Europeans and then you die horribly because your troops suck.

So the winner appears to be The Knights! For those that don't know, The Knights control the island province of Rhodes off the coast of Greece, start with a single cog and a single unit of Latin Medival Infantry.

Now is the time for people to create characters. I'll post an example below:

Name: Philibert of Nassau
Occupation: A moderatly succesful painter and craftsman. Not famous but not starving.
Residence: His family has owned a small house on the coast for generations. He lives with his grandfather and younger brother.
Personality: Generally easy-going and passive, he's not very courageous or one to stick up for himself but is amiable enough that he rarely has the need.

You can add more information if you wish. Anything that's not specified is open for me to decide :) Also I want real names for these characters, here's a good random name generator http://www.behindthename.com/random/

I'm going to bed now, with luck (and a couple characters to use) I'll have the first update posted tomorrow!

Not creative enough to think up something of my own, so I throw my support to this.  Love the whole "desires power" part.

Well, i guess its obvious zaporozhie wasn't chosen, but that doesn't stop me from making a zaporozhian character!  :D

Name: Volodymyr Haraktrnyk
Occupation: a Sellsword in a foreign land
Residence: Volodymyr has no permanent residence, he's made his way to Rhodes hoping for employment as a mercenary captain.
Personality: Extremely xenophobic and prejudiced, especially towards Muslims. Operates on an "kill first, ask questions later" basis. Religiously zealous Orthodox Christian.

Name: Bene Grassi
Occupation: Italian politician, philosopher, economist, and all-around demagogue.
Residence: a fancy manor in Rhodes.
Personality: his Venetian machinations fell apart, so he "gracefully exited" the country and came to build a new power base in Rhodes. He emphasizes an economic route to prominence for the Knights. He genuinely wants the nation to succeed, because he wants at least one of his political ventures to go well.

Nikolaos Stephanos:

Nikolaos heard a knock at the door and grumbled as he got up from his work. He had been reading a report from a trader in Lisboa. Rhodes is not a big island and he'd been in the business for a while. The other merchants seemed to look up to him as a kind of elder statesman. A knowledgeable master of the art.

He chuckled at the thought as he opened the door. At the door was a man in the uniform of The Knights. The man said in a gruff voice, "Is this the residence of Nikolaos Stephemaos?" Nikolaos answered, "Yes, it is. Why do you ask?" "You're wanted at the Palace. By the Grandmaster himself."

Nikolaos thanked the man and shut the door. His heart was beating hard. A meeting with the Grandmaster? This could be his chance for power; real power, not his status as advisor to these peddling merchants. He quickly got dressed and left for the Palace.

When he arrived he was told to wait until the Grandmaster was ready to recieve. After a short wait he was admitted to the Grandmaster's hall. Grandmaster Philibert de Naillac was a very noble and well-respected man. He had only become Grandmaster 3 years ago but was already very much adapted to his position. He ran The Knights efficiently.

Nikolaos kneeled and murmered, "You called for me Grandmaster?" The Grandmaster grimaced and said, "Oh rise, come on." Nikolaos hurridly got to his feet as the Grandmaster continued talking, "Yes I sent for you. I need you for an important matter of state." He gestured to the guards. "You may leave."

Nikolaos trembled as the guards left. Something too important for even the guards to hear? The Grandmaster noticed and chuckled. "Don't worry I only told them to leave so I wouldn't have to keep in form." His posture relaxed significantly and he stretched his arms. "You wouldn't believe how stiff you get!" He sat down at a table in the corner. Nikolaos stood still, a confused look on his face. The Grandmaster motioned and said, "Come take a seat and let's talk business."

Nikolaos carefully took a seat opposite the Grandmaster. As Grandmaster began to speak his voice took on a much more serious tone, "Our Order operates mainly on cash reserves from the Crusades but they are dwindling fast. The Pope seems to have decided that the heathens can keep the Holy Land." He grimaced and continued. " If we're to continue to operate we're going to need to start making money somehow. These Orthodox heretics on the island don't pay too much in tax so we've decided to focus on trade. You're to gather a large caravan and travel to Venice. They have always been our friends and so they will recieve you well. Your goal will be to set up a permanent trade route with them."

"Of course I'd never ask you to do this without the promise of payment. I'm willing to finance the whole expedition as well as allowing you and anyone you bring with you a certain degree of freedom from regulations and control. Do we have a deal?" Nikolaos had been running through a mental list of who and what he'd have to get before he departed but stopped when he heard the question that was directed at him. "Yes. Yes I can do that for you Grandmaster. Thank you so much for the oppurtunity. I won't dissapoint!" He shook the Grandmaster's hand and hastily departed to start to organize this expedition.
(We moved one step towards Free Trade and sent two merchants to Venice)

Bene Grassi:

"Yes that's coming along quite nicely. It'll look wonderful hanging in the grand hall." Bene Grassi was visiting the workshop of the artist Ferdandus di Rachii. Hanging in the workshop was a half-finished tapestry detailing the history of the Order.

"Remember though that I need this done for next January. I need to show it at my ball. It will be my first and I intend to make an impact." Di Rachii smiled and said, "Don't worry it will be done and it will be magnificint!" Bene, already halfway out the door, muttered, "It better be for what I'm paying you..."
(We commisioned a tapestry)

Lucus Alexyo:

"Lucus, Lucus, come quick!" Lucus was sleeping on the grassy hillside, when his best friend Pavlos came running up. "Wake up Lucas wake up!"

Lucus slowly opened his eyes and mumbled, "What, what's going on? Are the Ottoman's invading?"
"No, the next best thing! There's a ship battle! C'mon!" The two boys raced to the nearby cliffs and stopped at the edge, amazed looks on their faces.

Seven huge galleys of Byzantium were attacking a small cog flying the flag of Ramazan. One of the galleys had managed to pull up right beside it and there was an duel raging between the archers of both boats. The Ramazan archers had managed, despite being outnumbered, to drive the Byzantians below deck. But while they were cheering their victory, the other galleys were manouvering.
It was dangerous to sail this close to shore, rocks jutted up everywhere. The Ramazans were probably counting on the Byzantians sinking themselves. But the battle had bought them the time they needed to shift into position. Now one of them had a clear run at the cog.

The boys cheered as the galley smashed into the cog sending it down to the bottom. The archers on board picked off the sailers as they swam for the island. None made it away.

"That was amazing! Thanks for coming to get me Pavlos! Too bad The Knights weren't there or the battle would have been over way quicker!"
(There was a battle off the coast of Rhodes)

Theodoros Raptis:

Theodoros banged his mailed fist on the table, "I don't care what you say, we should be there supporting our Pope!" He was sitting at a table with serveral senior knights.

"Look Raptis, you're going to have to see this our way. The Pope has more than enough forces at his command. The battle's already won, he's just sieging the city now! Surely we are of better use here, watching over the people of the island? These Orthodox heretics are seeming mighty rebellious as of late."

Theodoros thought to himself, how dare these people even call themselves Knights! They had no appreciation for honour and glory. But he knew that if he did not buckle to their will than he risked expulsion from the Order. He smiled tightly and said, "You are right, of course. The role of Knights is to watch over peasents, not siege castles. Thank you for the conversation." And with that he walked out the door of the barracks, still dressed in his armour.
(The Papal State, our ally, went to war with the neighboring city of Urbino)

Nikolaos Stephanos:

Nikolaos stretched as he stepped off of the boat, with his aide Oren Pashir. While he tolerated ship rides he certainly didn't enjoy them. He always felt better on solid land. He then looked around. His Venitian friend, Rolando Portelli was supposed to meet him here but he was nowhere in sight. Portelli was a very reliable person and Nikolaos never knew him to be late.

Oren leaned in and whispered in his ear, "There are an awful lot of guards around here..." Nikolaos looked around and realized that there were alot of guards and they seemed to be moving towards his ship. He mutters "Oh God, you are cruel! I do trading runs all my life and on the most important run of my career something like this happens..."

He grabs Oren and hustles him back on the boat before shouting to the crew, "We're sailing now, let's go quickly!" Then grabs the gangplank himself and drags it up. The guards see this and start running for the ship.
But they're too late. The ship is away. Oren turns to Nikolaos and says, "What just happened? Why were the guards waiting for us and where's your friend?"

Nikolaos was slumped against the side of the boat with his head in his hands, "I don't know, I don't know..."
"Well where should we set a course for now? Back to Rhodes?"

Nikolaos jumped up, "No! I can't go back with nothing I'll be ruined! We have to find out what happened! Set a course for Ferrara, we can ask around there and find out just why they were waiting for us!"
(Our two merchants were rejected)

Volodymyr Haraktrnyk:

"Get your hands off me!" Volodymyr smashed the man who had grabbed him with an uppercut. There was a sickening crunch and one of the man's teeth sailed off in an arc across the pub. The man fell with a thud, out cold. He got to his feet and yelled, "I'm never going to set foot in a Goddamned Catholic church and there's no way any of you bastards can make me!

The man who was now lying unconcious was trying to convince people to convert, part of a new program started by the Knights to promote Catholicism. For every person you converted you were given a cash reward. He took Volodymyr for a simpleton and tried to force him to come to Church with him, when Volodymyr was really just drunk. And when Volodymyr gets drunk he gets violent...
(A missionary was sent to Rhodes in an attempt to convert it to Catholicism)

Bene Grassi:

"May I congradulate your excellent choice of investment Your Grace!" The former Bishop Valentine put the heavy sack of gold within his robes and proceeded to say, "As God is my witness I will make sure the appropriate amount of this gold finds it's way to The Knights, you can be sure of that Your Grace!"

Bene Grassi, now Bishop Grassi, chuckled. "Yes, I can be sure Valentine. Because I've deducted the amount that you owe in taxes from what I've given you and it is already on it's way via one of my most trusted servants to the palace."

Valentine's face twitched but he managed to smile and say in a subdued voice, "Th-thank you for saving me the trouble of bringing it there myself."

"Not a problem. But I wouldn't keep that gold in your vestements, I would like you to give them to be now." As he said that he scooped the mitre off of Valentine's suprised head and proceeded to examine himself in the mirror. "I have the face of a bishop, don't I Valentine?"
(We got an event in which an ecclastical title was sold for money)

Nikolaos Stephanos:

"Niko!" As he was walking through the streets of Ferrara, Nikolaos heard his name being called. He squinted and held his hand over his eyes to shield them from the bright Italian sun. "Portelli? What are you doing here? You were supposed to meet us in Venice!"
"Oh Niko I'm so glad you got away! The Venitians caught me doing some...uh...illegitimate business and they suspect you as having a part in it because I was scheduled to meet with you!"

Nikolaos sighed and silently cursed Portelli. Why did his only contact in Venice have to be an undercover crook? And why did he have to get caught at just the wrong time? Then he had an idea. "Come with me Portelli. I think we can get this all straightened out..."
"Thanks for turning over that crook Portelli." The Venetian trade officer met them at the docks. Nikolaos laughed, "I told him we were going to Genova."

The trade officer chuckled and continued, "Now about your trade proposition, I've put it before the trade council and they think it's sound. This letter's for your Grandmaster." He handed an ornatly sealed letter to Nikolaos.

Nikolaos thanked him and inside his heart raced. This was going to be golden for his career. The Grandmaster would be overjoyed, the other traders would be overjoyed and most importantly, when the profits started rolling in his banker would be overjoyed.
(I resent merchants to Venice and this time they were accepted)
