This thread is a godsend. I'm going to need this resource pile, to prepare for the first year of college this year.

Many thanks, guys.

Oh man, I love video lectures so much. It's way better than reading notes at the IT site I was looking at before.

The road to self-improvement appears to be long, but maybe it won't be as torturous as I had originally thought.

First success! Used a series on Geology to test out of a class, saving me $465 dollars in tuition. Hot damn, I think I'm going to make it through college debtless if I can study enough before each semester.

(Along with scholarships for the classes I need to actually take.)

Just bumping to ask a question.

So I got into those recorded lectures, and I'm curious. How many should I be watching a day if I want to be serious about it?

Slightly more than you can stand.

Well, generally a class is one lecture per day. One quarter usually has 3-6 classes at a time, depending on how much you can take at a time. That many.

It's very hard to say focusing solely on lectures. I'd have to go with as many as you can comfortably take in.

Usually you would have discussion and set problems or something along those lines (seminars, tutorials, whatever) to go along with the lectures to make sure you are actually understanding it and to pick up on any weak points.

If you want to be seriously serious about it then find ones with set problems and work through them. Find discussion groups online with people who have experience in the field and ask questions. Or try to help others with their own questions and problems. Unless you can manage that sort of thing then the lectures are pretty worthless.

And having said all that, just want to link Michael Nielsen's videos on Quantum Computing. He literally wrote the book in this area and the videos are easy enough to follow along. I think.

Basically, MIT are trying out some online only courses. This first one is to do with electronic engineering, which is a field I have not done any work in since early undergraduate days (save for some DC circuitsand AC theory lecturing), and I am sorely tempted to get in on this. Anyone else interested? A Bay12 study group could be quite a novel undertaking...

Oh, its free, totally online (all course resources), 100% legit and has accreditation at the end. MIT state that a 10 hour weekly commitment is needed to complete this course, which might put some of you off.
