Anyone interested in free college classes?
« on: August 24, 2011, 02:38:42 pm »

No, I'm not an incredibly well-embedded spambot. I did, however, recently find a fantastical website with 400-ish free (non-credit) online courses from all sorts of high-falutin' colleges. I'm currently devouring the math section.

Linkage

I figured I'd spread the love.

Giving the "Listening to music" course a try since it sounds like fun.

They seem the kind of divulgation videos that univs do sometimes rather than "courses" proper, though

That website looks useful, I'll have to investigate it later. Thanks for posting this :D.

Also, yeah. I did think this was spam at first lol.

I've been listening to the audio tracks of the Probability, Sets, and Counting course on my mp3 player while I do XC practice, and then when I get home doing the associated reading and coursework. Fun multitasking material.

May as well repost it here, since it doesn't at first glance appear to be on that list: http://www.ai-class.com/
It isn't a youtube series or anything, but will actually be taught like a class taking place this fall, complete with homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. It's an AI course, which based on the syllabus looks like it will be pretty good, more so due to the people teaching it. One worked on autonomous vehicles, while the other was a co-author of the most well known textbook on the modern field of AI.

Then of course there are the famous Feynman Lectures; there's a whole bunch of his lecture series which can be found if you search hard enough. Dated a bit, but some of the best explanations of that which was known at the time (quantum electrodynamics in particular) you will ever find. Here's a couple lecture series of his:

AI course is somewhat interesting, HMM, computer image, and robotics, and intro to basic NLP and IR (information retrieval). So it aims at teaching a student how to build a working android. (With basic A/V I/O from real world and decision making). It's not what most introduction to AI will teach you, but indeed can bring out those who wishes to learn about which practical knowledge required to build a robot. (It should be called intro to an android than intro do AI.) But 40 hours of class can only go so far. It's still up to students for learning and searching the topics on their own farther more.

And free MIT online courses are still a good place to go for engineering teachings.

I saw these a while ago and forgot about them. I need to get some onto my mp3 player for while I'm biking.

Posting here so I never ever forget. I always imagined learning computer programming beyond the very basics of data flow structures was near impossible without college classes, which is why I pursued them. This could be handy.

It's a small thing, but I don't intend to install iTunes, and some of those audio downloads need that...

(I can understand why, but I thought I'd say anyway...)

Also, Dad's just got an MP4 player (freebie, sans memory), so I'm wondering what videos I could stuff onto it and still appreciate on an approx 1"-square screen. :)

No problem. If someone wants to do one of the math classes with me, we can compare notes and whatnot.
