While it's only a single new source, it does show something extraordinarily interesting is beginning.
http://www.vision-class.org/
The class is Computer Vision.

It's another course, with links to and from those previous Stanford courses, and in the same style. However, this one is being offered by UC Berkeley. So now there is cross-university support for this particular style of courses; and from names which aren't exactly something to sneeze at. What that means for the future of such courses can only be a good thing.

Does anyone know if these run over the summer? I'd love to take some of these, and I'm down to one full semester's worth of classes I have to take.

Is it odd that I'm now going to be taking college classes during my break from college classes?

Arrgghhh!!!!  The choices!!!!!  I demand less choices!!!!!

(Seriously, I'm in the midst of several self-study things... most of which are admittedly less official... that my Loss Aversion is likely to kick in and I'm like Tiffany Achings little brother in a room full of sweeties[1].  I consider myself "a striving, but failing, polymath"...  Gaining knowledge is good.  Application of such knowledge is better.  Guess what I am, and am not, managing to do, within the admittedly narrow parameters I just laid down...)

OOOOH!!! Further update on those courses; it seems I was right; they have been brought together under one banner:
Coursera
So now there are two very excellent sources I'm aware of for online courses which are more than the typical recordings of lectures. Udacity being the other.

From their jobs page:
Quote
We are committed to making the best education in the world freely available to any person who seeks it. We envision people throughout the world, in both developed and developing countries, using our platform to get access to world-leading education that has so far been available only to a tiny few. We see them using this education to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.

We see a future where world-leading educators are at the center of the education conversation, and their reach is limitless, bounded only by the curiosity of those who seek their knowledge; where top-notch universities serve millions instead of thousands. In this future, ours will be the platform where the online conversation between educators and students will take place, and where students go to for most of their academic needs.

So if anyone else is interested, Stanford has an Introduction to Cryptography course that starts on Monday. It's a real, free course with weekly lectures, problem sets, and programming assignments. The topic is relevant to pretty much all of you who use the internet and computers.

So come on! Take this class with me. I could use a few study buddies for help and motivation.

An update on Coursera and Udacity classes:
Some of them have now started, though enrollment is still open. Udacity added 3 new courses starting next month:
Programming Languages
Web Application Engineering
Applied Crytography

Another bump for a bit of an update on Coursera; it looks like it has pretty well branched out to include a larger variety of subjects, rather than just the initial CS and math related topics it initially offered.

Hmmm these could go together well with pdf textbooks. Maybe I should learn an entire degree of material and show up to take all the tests at once. And make sure to look like a hippy to give people something to think about.

This is just a dream for now, until I get my arse in gear and really cram that brain with a variety of subjects.

Bumping because MITx has now expanded and joined with Harvard and UC Berkeley to create edx. Some of the classes are beginners classes, while others (UC Berkeley's) seem to be meant for more advanced students. I plan on doing MIT's computer science course and chemistry courses if anyone is interested.

An interesting update on Coursera:
Apparently it now has a career services thing from which you can allow companies to view your resume, details about the coursera classes (and grades/progress in them) and other information. Dunno how many/which companies will be/are using it to find employees, but I would imagine it can't hurt, and is certainly an interesting move on Coursera's part.
