We would need to make them easily transportable, in trains, by Llamas, so that Llamas can be used to rapidly build mine-fields...

Llamas?

Kangaroos or sparrows, man.

Preferably Kangaroos.

If it is dropping mines, then it is probably a pigeon...

No, it's hauling stationary gun platforms. Just like it would haul any other cargo. Plus, we don't have plans for a minelaying system, nor plans for mines.

Autonomous space-turrets and minefields fulfil similar functions...

They are not autonomous.

They should be, just have them target any near object that is moving relative to themselves and you have a minefield, perfect for creating a protected corridor that traders cannot escape from.

In that case they should be anonymous.

That TRADERS cannot escape from? Seriously? WE ARE NOT PIRATES! Besides, the things are designed to be sold anyways. That's how the game works.

Well, the theory is that the pirates couldn't get in, so the traders being unable to get out shouldn't be much of an issue, of course, unless you had some way of limiting their engagement arc, which is proof against tampering, then they guard a sphere, which would be difficult to use to surround a large corridor, but a fixed installation may be able to use them to guard a flank and so have only one corridor that needs defending...

Perhaps we could draw up some computer Friend Or Foe Identification programs.

No, too easily exploited, have a disabling code for maintenance and retrieval, with a limited rate of input and an alert in the case of an incorrect code, but once you have an automated I.F.F. then it only takes one instance of a F. being mistaken for a F. and you have problems...

But anyway, we don't have the targeting technology for anything but a fixed gun and that just won't cut it for light space-munitions. Once we have a working missile defence then we can talk armed craft, for now we will just sell the weapons as is, not mounted on anything. Once we have our space-sports-car/death-trap we can mount fixed guns on it, strafing asteroids should extend the fun factor of a highly manoeuvrable and over-powered space-buggy. Hmmm, we can call it the Mongoose Space-buggy. But for military purposes you really want turrets with some degree of automation. A pilot, probably remotely, selects the turrets target and then concentrates on keeping the craft from being hit. And a trader would rather just hit a button and have all their turrets become omnicidal then have to have a crew of sufficient size and training to manually defend the ship.
