As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

What happens when it grows up to be an adult if you don't lay it to rest?
Does it just grow up into a normal ghost?

It will become a Ghostly Peasant.  And then, if you wait a very long time, the ghost will die of old age.

I just wish Dwarven ghosts where in the Raws.
And that there was some way to make them an actual part of society via modding.
That way, I could create the invincible Fortress.

The baby may be the perfect shield, attackers might attack the invulnerable baby instead of the mother.

Don't tell anyone that you can see their shadows. If they hear you telling anyone, if you let them know that you know of them, they will get you.

It's good that dwarf ghosts aren't the sissy immaterial kind, but instead are simply able to phase through walls at will.

But you never see a movie where a terrible coal plant accident causes a horrible devastation, do you? Nope, everyone seems to think that nuclear plants get their energy by smacking live atomic warheads all day or something.

Find a way to weaponize it.

War Ghosts  :o

Put the mother into the militia.  Considering we know they sometimes use their babies as shields or improvised weaponry, the outcome of wielding a dead infant's soul should be interesting.

It'll be worse when the next update comes and we get necromancers re-animating the dead:

Ral Egomlogem, Weaver cancels Seeking Infant: Interrupted by Zombie dwarven baby.

Wow.  Examples of both why I love this game AND why I love this forum, all in one thread.

DF sets out a challenge to us with no explanation and no assistance, and each time we fail it becomes more merciless, but we continue in the hopes that we can show it, "See?  I'm doing good, right?  I kept the little men alive!  You're proud of me, right?"

[explain the joke]
I think the mother will attempt to pick up the baby and carry it, even if it has been animated and wants to attack her.

Better:
Ral Egomlogem, Weaver, cancels Seeking Infant: Interrupted by Zombie dwarven baby right arm.
