Well Tampa's kinda sheltered. Gulf storms are usually going to miss the Florida Gulf coast, and Atlantic storms are going to slam into the other side of Florida first. And Long Island is far enough north that the cold water usually kills and/or deflects storms before they get there.

If you want a real test, move to Ocracoke or Hatteras and ride one out.

Despite being in a front-line state for hurricanes, it's actually been rather tame these past couple years lately, and I feel confident it's gonna miss us during the week (no bad vibes or anxiousness to check out the surf). Kinda nice for now, especially seeing as our old beach of a decade+ ago returned (smooth white sand again, instead of the rusty shelly sand), along with low tides existing again. Part of my confidence that we're not likely to get hit is also watching the beach life cluster around here (birds are flocking into our area en masse, and so are the sharks and other sea life). I think Central Florida is becoming the safe haven for the upcoming storm for this session; or at least a safety checkpoint for nature. Also gives me a good feeling that, also thanks to it being so damn hot these past few days, the high pressure system will keep the hurricane the hell away from us, and maybe blow it out to sea again.

I hope everyone north of us fares well, provided the storm bypasses us, and this becomes a fun storm (epic waves to catch for surfing, or storm surges making rock climbing/hanging out at shore walls more fun) instead of a devastating/destructive one. To everyone south of us, I hope they didn't get hit too hard. Any fishing ships out in the sea despite this (and I tend to see a few of them from time to time), they've got some balls.

So apparently Mother Nature can't decide which way she wants to try and kill me...hurricane or earthquake. My guess is that we'll get both simultaneously, and then when my attention is focused on the dual threats......

...BAM! Horde of vampire weasels. I'll never see it coming.

Meh.
Morning update: It is a tale. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.

Specifically, I'm an idiot for getting worked up about this, and the storm continues to shift east. Outer Banks will get hit (as they always do), but most of North Carolina will just get a little wind and rain. Nothing to see here, move along.

Pretty ironic that Irene means peaceful.

Well good night, Irene

In Philly all we get is the worn-out aftershock of hurricanes, but it's still enough to screw up my weekend bike camping plans. Dammit.

supposed to be cat 2 when it passes western mass, according to predicted paths.
my car is currently at the mechanics. maybe they will let me keep it inside the garage till the storm passes?
It's already been struck by lightning, now it'll be trying to survive a hurricane, and with the earthquake earlier this week and the tornados this year, all we need now is a volcano...

I just left home on the east coast and am now settled into my new college dorm in the appalacian foothills.  When Irene destroys the east coast, I'm gonna be A-ok, suckas!

I'll probably find myself biking through Philly regardless of the hurricane.

Well, just to spite me, Irene decided to swing back to the West and is now targeted to make landfall near Cape Lookout. And she got big. Tropical storm force winds have a 250-mile radius from center of rotation.

The main question for me is, will it wait until after I'm *at* work in the morning to hit? Because I don't relish the thought of driving into work with 50mph winds and blinding rain.

Didn't wait for the morning. We're getting some gale force winds in Raleigh and the outer rain bands now. Gonna be a fun commute in about 4 hours.  :-\  Looks like we'll get more or less a glancing blow here, though. 1st big bullet of the season successfully dodged.

DC, Philly, New Jersey and NYC might want to batten down the hatches. Irene's projected to retain at least Category 1 strength as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard. Not that big of a deal unless you're totally not used to a hurricane, and/or right at sea level. NYC gets it on both counts.
