My computer recently has started to do a really, really annoying thing. Every 25 seconds or so, it releases the focus on the current window that I am on, and I am booted out of any games or anything that I am doing or typing until I click on the window again. This is exactly the same as if you click the taskbar at the bottom of the screen where there aren't any icons, but it happens automatically and all the time. All games are unplayable because this symptom causes them to leave fullscreen mode and generally ruins the whole experience. I'm thinking it has to do with some sort of background update process running amok, but I have not been able to find it yet. I'm considering just reinstalling windows, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue or knows enough to fix it. This happens on any program I use, including this browser. I've had to reselect this text box 6 times already just to type this message.
If it helps, I run 64 bit windows 7 and have already scanned for viruses/restarted/looked in the task manager.

Did you install anything recently? It sounds like something in the background is trying to request focus away from everything else. It is extremely suspicious though and you would probably be best to reinstall windows.

I think I might do just that. My computer is due for a reinstall and wipe anyway; I don't use 70% of what is on it regularly and I could have a much tidier experience. How exactly does this process go for windows 7?

I think you just pop your Win 7 disk in and boot from it. And it should start you out by formatting your hard drive for a fresh install.
