Wait, since when do they make nails out of steel? Isn't it cheaper and just as effective to use iron? And it is kinda odd that nails rust so well if they're galvanized steel.

Steel is bad for electro magnets, because the magnet will become permanent.

Also, I kind of want to try basic smelting now.

Might be able to use a handle broken off of a cast-iron pan.

Actually the cheapest iron to make is cast iron, but that tends to be brittle and as a result it's not great for making nails. Steel is actually made by reducing the carbon content in iron ore, improving it's qualities. Pure iron would be obtained by removing all carbon (and all silicon but that has lesser effects on the metal properties) and as a result it's even more expensive then cheap steel. The reason steel nails still rust is that they use a cheap, non corrosion-resistant steel type instead of stainless steel.

Once for a school project, we were supposed to design a space heater to certain specs and find the cheapest place to acquire all the parts online.  The problem is that while most of the parts weren't too hard to figure out, we needed one part to meet rather picky specifications (albeit high tolerance ones) and machine shops don't do orders for single parts, not at reasonable prices anyway.  Eventually we figured out that the cheapest way to get the part we needed would be to buy a space heater from a big box store, disassemble it and use that one piece to make our space heater.

So I think for your electromagnet you should take the same approach.  Buy something with a transducer in it, take it apart and disassemble it to get your iron.

And also pure iron is soft like plasticine, kinda useless as a nail :)

By the way, if we add more silicon to steel, we will get electrical steel, which returns us exactly to the thread theme. Levi, may I know the specification of said magnet? Winding type, voltage, etc.? Just curious :)

No specifications as I know almost nothing about this sort of thing and am going to be just experimenting with it to begin with.  I've got some magnet wire and some batteries, and I was just going to have fun from that point.  :)

He doesn`d need AC for an electromagnet.

... Doah! Was thinking of a transformer here. Of course an electromagnet works on a DC current...
