What's Your Favorite Genre?
« on: August 22, 2011, 02:03:11 am »

I'm just curious.

Note: Genre meaning things like sci-fi or fantasy, as opposed to things like romance or non fiction.
I like most genres but am leaning towards sci-fi.

My favorites? Science fiction, historical fiction and whatever it is that Kurt Vonnegut wrote.

I tend to dislike most fantasy books (especially high fantasy) because they rely too heavily on clichés I've grown tired of... Tolkien's an exception, though. His work shows that he's really thought it out.

The only fantasy books I liked were the Game of Thrones books.
The best fantasy game would have to be Dwarf Fortress.
The best fantasy movies, were probably the LOTR movies.

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I think fantasy movies annd games are generally better than fantasy books. A book is written by a single person, with typically no professionals there to tell him/her how stale some of the stuff may be. Movies and games are written and designed by teams of professionals, who typically know their stuff and know which ideas have been overdone lately.

Good sirs, while your views seem perfectly acceptable for street rabble, any gentlemen is a true conciser of steampunk!

I must disagree wholly with your statement, OP, as my favourite genres are non-fiction and romance~ :\

My favorite Angband variant is Steamband, a Steampunk version. Extremely cool. It hasn't been updated since 2008 - I was thinking of picking it up myself and continuing development if the original dev doesn't show up...

@ein, I have nothing against the two, I'm just more interested in asking about setting based genres, as opposed to romance which could be applied to any setting.

I guess if we're talking about settings, I prefer settings based on real life~
Steampunk is always fun, and modern low fantasy, but eh, high fantasy bores me, as does most science fiction~

I'm not really a fan of sci-fi books, or movies, or even games, I guess it's just my favorite for creative purposes.

Freaking love low fantasy! Anything by Diana Wynne Jones is good, not sure if it always counts, but it is close.

I don't have a favourite genre. I just dislike some more than others.

Any genre will do, because there are good books/games/movies/whatnot in any genre. I choose a book/game/movie/whatnot based on what I feel like at the moment in question.

We can make a poll.
