Actually playing the game
« on: August 21, 2011, 07:32:01 pm »

ive noticed recently that I'm on these forums a lot more than i actually play the game....
wether it be ideas, stories, or hints, for some reason i feel the need to obtain as much
info about the game as possible, and as such, not actually play all that much. who else
is like this and is it a problem really?

Aside from that, being rational is not only optional, but is frowned upon.  We hate elves.  We kill for socks.  We sacrifice nobles.  We love kobolds.

I used to be like this. I found the solution to be to play the game and read the forums at the same time.

Forum has a better interface.

...

But seriously, it's been a few weeks since I last played DF. Going on the forums isn't nearly as much of a time investment, and even experienced players with no need to ask questions here will spend the majority of their time here. I'm willing to bet that 90% of the forum users browse the forum and talk about the game more than they actually play it.

I'm on these forums way more than playing the game recently. General Discussion is full of people who very rarely play the game. It's not a problem; they're both just for fun.

If your issue is the need to gather as much information as possible without actually playing the game, perhaps to avoid failure, here's a tip:
The best way to learn about Dwarf Fortress is playing it. (Well, and the wiki.) If you're enjoying yourself on the forums, though, don't worry about it. Just have fun.

I used to be like this. I found the solution to be to play the game and read the forums at the same time.
This too. I started leaving the game running while on the forums; it made game time pass a lot quicker, and was overall more fun. May not be to everyone's enjoyment.

DF requires quite a bit of investment of time before you get a "fun" fortress, or at least a fortress you have some connections with since you spent so much time on it. It's hard to jump in to even for people who have been playing it for years. One of those people is me.

I like to wait until I have enough booze to play DF intoxicated. Then I try to play it a week later and wonder why (and how) things like children running from enraged badgers, goblins locked in random bedrooms/barracks, and a large 'seemingly everything' stockpile is possible.

Meanwhile, I peruse the forums so I can use words that don't come up in everyday conversations.

I visit often to check for Tarn's updates but I don't play the game all that much.  I love the idea of the game but I prefer watching others play games than playing them myself.  Figuring out what I want to do in the game is the hardest part.
My current fort has some grazing areas and above ground farms but that was out of necessity as I spent far too long figuring out what layout I want for the workshops that I completely forgot about feeding them so I ended up throwing something together in an unsatisfactory way.  May abandon soon.

I imagine once the economy and trading are fixed I would start playing more because I always enjoyed the thought of being a trading depot exporting high quality goods and having a nice little buzzing market.  For now I just dump mugs in exchange for booze, meat, and metal for a few seasons or just forget about trading altogether.  With the new update coming soon Adventure Mode sounds worth checking out.

I spend more time on the forums than playing and when I do play it's often just to test things out that I haven't tried before like creating an obsidian farm, drowning trap or magma piston. I spend a lot of time messing around with military training to find the optimal method sans danger rooms.

I haven't been playing that much lately - waiting for the new version. As someone's said, starting up a fort can be pretty tedious, and I really CBA at the moment.

So far, I am new. I have a few fortresses in different places, trying different things. It is seriously slowing life down in the other areas I should pay attention to.

I've a nice volcano I am playing with, even, my first joy of magma on a lucky world-gen.

I am sort of stuck on playing/wikiing and hanging out here. I notice the fun of a masterfully crafted forum community. I am a usually anti-forum kind of guy. You dorf-tards may change my mind. I know that in my life I have never posted so much in any one place. (Maybe once on a UO forum, but that was a decade-ish ago.)

So, join the club. Can I have yer stray reindeer bull? I need the meat. (If you've a barrel of wine...)

Post again, ShadowBroker. It is good for your health. Or our health. The lines get very blurry.

I believe that people who forum browse more than they play just aren't that addicted to the game anymore - they're past the strong urge to play, but still interested enough to want to be in touch with the game through the forums.

At least, that's how it goes for me. One of my savegames keeps crashing and the other is stuck in a really frustrating situation, and I just don't that much feel like starting yet another new fortress.

When I do play I play for several hours at a time. That only happens once or twice a month, though. I browse the forums a lot each day (more than I rightly should).

i browse the forums a lot.  i play all day once every three days or so.  i like to give out what help i can, and get ideas for plans for the next session.  it usually does take all day though.... a year takes a very long time at 12 fps.

i also like to "hear" about other people's experiences.  and there is a story or two that i follow, as well.

I haven't played DF in... months probably. I'm waiting for the update, but I just like the humour inherent in the DF fourms and Bay12 in general.

I'm playing every few days... usually after a while something epic happens that I just need to write about and then I end up reading other stories for half the night ;)

There was a time when I didn't play for months but spend all the time on the forum. That ended with the release of v31 when everyone started talking about the new features which I never experienced. It's hard to talk about a game you don't even know...
