My Dwarf Fortress vs. Minecraft debate
« on: August 21, 2011, 04:21:11 am »

Okay, before you say anything, please hear me out.

I accidentally started a whole shitstorm about this ages old debate about DF vs. MC in my blog. People have then said that I'm making the community look bad with my arguments (even though I've never stated that I'm speaking for any community, as my personal opinions are my own).

So I decided to ask the truth from the community; how do you see my political neutrality in this debate? Am I unintentionally making the community look bad, and if so, how badly? If I am doing something wrong, how should I proceed? Or in general, what should I do with this at all?

Here is the link to my blog: http://zeroquarters.tumblr.com/

To point out the first few, most important posts that started the whole thing:

http://zeroquarters.tumblr.com/post/8952750625/response-2
http://zeroquarters.tumblr.com/post/9166307148/zeroquarters-the-blog-poor-notch

Honest thoughts and criticism appreciated, but no flaming please. I've had enough of that with the people of tumblr.

You done goofed.

I dunno what to say to help you.

I don't think you really can compare Minecraft to DF all that well, simply because of the difference in complexity. The problem you're having is that you didn't make it abundantly clear in your first post that it was opinion, and people on the Internet tend to forget that fact != opinion.

Sad to say it, mate, but you opened a can of worms and you'll have to deal with it on your own.

I don't personally like MineCraft, but I don't see any point in debating it. People seem to have extremely strong opinions about games anyway...

Kay12 pretty much said it. Debating it is just throwing fuel on a fire, beating a dead horse.  The Dwarf Fortress vs. Minecraft debate is too inflammatory and really all comes down to personal preference.

Although I do think it's funny that somebody else used the argument that your comparison was unfair because Minecraft is in beta.

And as far as the content gap, there's also time and effort of development to consider. It's comparing 5 years of continuous development versus 2 years of it (or however old Minecraft is) and it's unfair to compare content in such a way. Although I doubt that Minecraft will ever match or surpass DF in amount of content, there's also something to be said for focus and simplicity.

It's a tired debate that only makes people angry or, at best, annoyed because you brought it up again.

*nods appreciatively*

I for one would not mind a bit more moderation of Minecraft threads.  I appreciate that many enjoy that game, and might like to discuss that in relation to DF since they both feature, err, building of some sort like no other game does, but that discussion should really be in the other games forum, and should probably be only in one thread, IMO.

What debate? There's no debate. Both of them can be quite fun.

Yeah dude, you brought this upon yourself.

I was largely confused about where the angst was coming from, but on that last post we get into a discussion about Notch and Scrolls.

Huh what?
Scrolls (the game Notch is making) has absolutely nothing to do with The Elder Scrolls.  Like, not even the same genre.1

No wonder you're getting so much flak, you started ranting and raving about how Notch stole all of his content and has no original ideas.  And guess what?  People objected to that notion.

All the (basically pointless) debate over what is a fact and what is an opinion makes my eyes bleed.

Silly debate, anyway.  In my limited experience, Minecraft is an extremely boring single-player game, the appeal comes from the multiplayer aspect.  DF doesn't even try to do multiplayer; they're apples and oranges.

(a thought just occurred to me: when Toady said "[the problem] isn’t with Minecraft so much as it’s with society,” I think most of us took it as one of those "entertainment that appeals to the lowest common denominator is more popular than it should be" arguments.  But maybe it's more about the multiplayer/single-player distinction, and how a lot of the popularity of the former is based on it being a social outlet for otherwise isolated, lonely people?)

This.

From what I can tell from your blog it seems like you're being extremely agressive about your opinion even when it is completely unfounded. That this would result in lots of flames is fairly predictable.

I appreciate your given thoughts on the matter, but I wished to know more about the neutrality to the community and how to deal with this matter, rather than new takes on the whole discussion.

All of the things you brought up have been discussed in greater detail in the blog.

This is really tiresome reading.
Not helping.

I'm glad to get new points of views on this but... I don't really plan on keeping this debate up for long. I just don't know how I should wrap it up.

Like I said, you're pretty much on your own on this one. Wanna know how to avoid stuff like this in the future? Don't compare games where one game has a large fanbase of reasonably intelligent people and the other game has a fanbase where many people's intelligence is questionable1.

1Naturally, someone will take offense at even something like this. Oh well.
