Technically, lava is impure magma. When magma is heading towards the surface (AKA volcano), it picks up more and more rock, as opposed to metal. Magma has mostly metal contents, whilst lava has mostly rock.

The heart of Earth is made of metal. The insides are molten metal. Then the skin is rock.

EDIT: To summarize, magma is pure. Lava is not. Lava does not mean surface magma. Lava is dirty magma.
