Obsidian Rain(Megaproject idea)
« on: August 20, 2011, 12:31:53 pm »

So I was thinking.
We like Magma.
We like obsidian.
We like cave-ins.
We DON'T like goblins, elves, and a grand majority of things that live outside of a mountain.
Why don't we just combine everything together?
By utilizing pumps and a giant floor in the sky(With 7-space holes all over it, of course,) you could theoretically design artificial Obsidian Rain by pumping water and magma together..From really, really great heights. Leading to uncertain death, and fun outdoors activities.

And lots and lots of cave-in dust. It would also be a great way to get rid of migrants. The only problem is that the obsidian would need to fall all the way to the magma sea to not clutter up the device.

EDIT: What am I saying, that's a bonus.

Yes, the biggest problem with using obsidian casting as a defense mechanism is the inability to clear the trap. It was once possible when bottomless pits were in the game, but now it's an extremely inefficient and labor intensive process. You get poor targeting, constant cave-in spam, slow reloading and it's usually no more effective than a long row of weapon traps.

You do know that's an argument FOR its construction, right?

Like I said, magma sea. Magma flow/semi-molten rock "eats" cave-ins, and has a bottomless "appetite."

Erm..
..Obsidian gun implies you're only trying to hit one location.
This is meant to be spread over the whole map, and launch a lot of cave-ins above-ground at once.
Hence the name 'Obsidian Rain.'

Sounds like a good idea. Although any facilities directly under the surface would be endangered.

EDIT: Oh, right. Argument towards building it...

Less like rain, more like a dwarven mortar strike of superheated stone.

This must happen!

Actually I think with careful use of floodgates and retracting bridges, it may be possible to make an automatically-reloading obsidian dropper. It may depend on how the physics of bridges works though. And you'd need to stop cave-ins from pausing the game.

Also, why would it need to fall to the magma sea? If the obsidian block's only 1Z high, it'll just crash leaving an obsidian floor. Unless you have tunnels in the Z level beneath the surface, in which case FUN may ensue....

This seems like it'd be a cool way to destroy a fortress actually, now that I think about it

It'd make for a cool story.  "The day that the sky fell."
