i call thee! smarter and indie community! help my quest!
« on: August 20, 2011, 10:24:04 am »

I'm looking for a game.
A pc game.
A pc game were you explore.
BUT.
What you explore are caves, and dungeons.
you can have the outside world. if you want.
but you explore caves to see ancient ruins.
you move through the wreckage of the past to find new things.
or you come upon new and exciting things which help you figure out on your own what happened.
like Fallout 3 new vegas, exploring ancient places now corrupted by radiations.
like oblivion dungeons (even though they were repetitive)
a game were once you enter a dungeon, you can even forget there is an outside world.
and which you can explore to understand the STORY of the dungeon. Why was it built here? what was it about? what did they do? why the hell did everything end up in goo?
possibly with multiple dungeons.
oh, i do have all of the bethesda series games, like fallout 3-nv-oblivion-morrowind-excetera.
i'd like if possible, to have it with nice graphics. but i'm fine even with a good @ as long as places are well descripted.
hope to hear from you soon... (just to be precise, like going fortress mode in DF to then abbandon it after a couple decades+sieges and explore it again with an adventurer, and looking at ancient designs of wall while occasionally battling the monster...but with more sense on the designs on the wall)

Question: Does it need to generate random dungeons and be nonlinear?

(BTW: I honestly believe that whether you answer yes or no, the closest you'll get will be a roguelike with little graphics, but still)

it doesn't need to be linear.
what i want is to enter a dungeon, (maybe through a door that actually moves! but i'm not picky) and maybe end up seeing blood and scratches on the wall, reach the central complex while outside the pouring rain is heard, see trails of blood, and crumpled pieces of paper which depict mad experiments made by necromancers, and while you turn to leave a zombie pops out like it waited on you just that moment.
i'm meaning...dungeon Immersion.
whatever makes you think "this dungeon could pretty much BE REAL" would be appreciated.

that's were the "itch" to find another exploration with immersion game came from.
it doesn't necessary have to be caves.
it could also be space/island stranded or similar.
as long as:
there is a story.
you can uncover the story by exploring (scratches on wall, crumbled notes eccetera)

Terraria will hold you for a week, but then go thin far too quickly. Still, worth it.

Ever tried Arx Fatalis?

There isn't really an 'outside world' for it though... basically the sun died and so all the inhabitants living on the planet went underground. It's pretty much a giant dungeon crawl, with a high-fantasy type setting- there are humans, trolls, goblins, dwarves if I remember correctly, serpent people, ratmen, etc.

The graphics are a bit dated, but still pretty good.

I don't know about really 'exploring the story of the dungeon', although I guess since the whole game is a cave/dungeon you'd just play the main questline.

The game world is a decent size, and it's separated into different levels. These aren't like actual levels of a videogame, I mean the world is physically separated into different levels/layers, and to change levels you have to go up or down stairs or things like that. I believe there are 8 levels in all.

There is magic, and casting spells is done by making certain symbols using the mouse.

There is a bit of character creation and development, like an RPG... you have different skills and attributes. In this way, you can play different styles (warrior, mage, thief, the usual). The locations are unique and the world is very immersive.

The UI is a bit clunky, but once you figure it out it isn't too much of a problem.

The game is $5 on Steam, and there is also a demo you can try.
