Getting my mayor to stand on a certain spot.
« on: August 19, 2011, 09:02:51 pm »

So I have arranged a treat for my mayor, it is his reward for repeatedly mandating gold items. I just need him to stand on a hatch. How do I get him to stand on an exact spot?

Burrows?

Have the hatch in a hallway with doors just before and just after it.  At the far end of the hallway, a lever set so that only your mayor can pull it.  Cancel all his other jobs and designate the lever to be pulled.  At the moment he steps on the hatch, pause the game and lock the doors before and after him.  This does require some careful timing on your part.

Alternately, go to your Nobles screen and assign someone else to be mayor.  Even though the position of Mayor is by election, you can still manually reassign the position.

You could send a rabid giant badger after him. That usually works. Too well, actually.

He doesnt care that I put up a burrow, he just sits in our food stockpile and does nothing. I have the burrow set as the tile on the hatch and nothing else. When he does go to the burrow, he is always 5 or so squares away from it.

Burrows don't control movement, they just make anything outside the burrow forbidden to dwarves assigned to the burrow.  Your mayor can't do anything outside the burrow, but if there's nothing inside the burrow for him to do he'll have no reason to go to the burrow.

Make him an engraver, designate the wall next to the hatch as part of the burrow, have said wall smoothed.

Single tile burrow.  Add him to his own military squad.  Set a schedule to defend that single tile burrow and activate his squad's alert level as appropriate.  Other than leaving to get food/drink/sleep, he should now stand on that tile.

Possible alternative is setting him as a civilian of that burrow, clearing all labours, and putting a single tile meeting zone on top of the burrow.  But I suspect that would be less reliable and possibly result in other non-mayor dwarves hanging out there too.

Lever with workshop profile restricted to only that mayor needs pulling.

No, most people only read the last few posts. It's common in all forums, that's why things get restated so often. I've still had success using the engraving method.

That... explains a LOT really. Thanks for clarifying that.

At first I was about to say "DURR WELL THEN WHY DO MY DWARVES RUN TO THE BURROW WHEN I SET AN ALERT FOR THEM TO GO THERE", but then I realized I set my burrows in meeting areas, and dwarves default to those areas when they have no jobs.

THANK YOU GOOD SIR
