I don't quite understand what you're getting at. You'll still be fighting, so you'll still get loot (1/4 this time).

Try again with the town, with different engineers now...
[2]How on earth would a sane ruler believe that artisans will do work without pay? Not even one of the 497 contenders helped you.
((But my taxes give me like 20 florins each quarter. And right now my army upkeep is 2 a quarter so I should have 38 florins actually.))
[4]. I... Cave in. Now you have 17 florins after recruitment. 4th Levy Infantry recruited. You can't recruit any more levies this year.
[2-3+2=1]The 20f did went into a shipyard, but it is too small for anything other than fishing boats. In other words, 20f wasted.
*sigh* okay, if we both cave, the orders still conflict.

Just follow my previous orders, i.e, build fortifications, no ambush.
[5+1(Carpenter)+.5(Troops)-2(difficulty)] Howard's troops, despite without extra pay, went all over Lencil to find enough wood for a small wooden fort. They gathered the materials quickly and [2] the Carreran troops did not took opportunity. This simple fort will finish very soon.
[5] Unfortunately as they see the fort being erected, they feel provoked and are attempting to lay siege. [1] Your men failed to give any meaningful estimate of how much troops they have mobilized.

Before I roll for the Carreran troops, you have a last chance to raise or augment troops (the battle is on your soil, and you can get at most 5f in horses, remember). [2] Bankers are too afraid of bank runs and refuse to lend you cash. After that we'll go to tactics.

What are the stats on my business. How many florins do I gain per quarter?
This is how your business operate:

Your main business will be involving deposits and loans, and Bills of exchange. All these work practically like IRL in the 21st century: You gain from differential interest between deposits and loans, difference in exchange rates (Florins are trade coins, not local currency) and service charges. Each quarter you can choose a business strategy on each category: From Ultra Cautious, Cautious, Normal, Risky, and Ultra Risky. Being Ultra-cautious means you never lose money, but your business will probably stagnate. Being Ultra Risky means you do business with people with questionable ability to repay and you may either earn high interest or lose money as a result.

Ships from your father arrives each quarter. Unless you explicitly requested extra, I assume you requested just enough to balance accounts (but not cover losses). These funds only arrive next quarter, and should be used (i.e. loaned out) in that quarter.

[5][5] Your deposit taking business has liabilities of 25f, and you expect to make 1f per quarter using a normal strategy. Your Bills of exchange business liabilities of 25f, and you expect to make 1f per quarter using a normal strategy.

((thanks for the info evilcherry))

The bank was up and running and his father had sent the ships, life was actually going good. He just needed to get friendly with the people of the city.

"Selima, how many florins do we have for our personal use?"
"5 florins Mahi"
"Hmm...well I guess to make some you gotta lose some, eh?"
"What are you suggesting?"
"We'll throw a party and invite all the notables of society. heck we'll even invite a few commoners."
"Mahi...I can understand why you would think this is a good idea but your father's a prick. He'll think your being like your fool of a brother   Devest."
"Well...I can see you point there...Father won't understand. But first we need to know how many florins we have. Selima get our clerks to see how much money is currently being trusted to us."
"Yes Mahi."
"Oh one more thing: could you find out if we could make a profit from investing in the docks and warehouses?"

Action- See how many florins are currently being entrusted to us in the bank. See if we could make a profit investing in the docks and warehouses. In other words, see the price of the warehouses and see if the docks are government-owned or owned by the people.

"God damn it!"  Roderigo picked up the shattered coinage and let it tinkle to the floor.  "Gold and silver doesn't shatter like that.  They were even gambling with counterfeits?  Fat lot of luck there."

Roderigo sifted through the loose change in his rapidly declining puse and flipped the highest denomination - a large gold coin - onto the bar.

"That had better pay for my tab as well, Mac.  Sorry about the mess."

The barman shrugged and kept on polishing glasses with a dirty rag.

"Was going to happen sooner or later.  Besides, it'll do us good to shake off the reputation.  Was starting to lose custom, and they never cut me in enough.  By the by, they've got a couple of mares and a stallion out back.  If they're still there in the morning, I'm taking them as extra damage cover."

"That so?  Well, let's hope you don't run into any horse thieves."

Roderigo gave the barman a wink and trotted off to the stables.  The horses were easy enough to find, they were the only ones there; a pair of greys and a black stallion.  Roderigo let out a low whistle at the horses.  This was more like it.

Roderigo takes a bit of time to wash the blood out of his old clothes, then steals the horses.

Roderigo crosses the border, or at least heads to the next inn and gets some sleep there.  Once the opportunity arrives, he will try to sell the two mares and keep the stallion for himself.

Unless otherwise mentioned Roderigo continues to travel towards Lencil at a more leisurely pace now that he has crossed the border, stopping at inns (higher class inns, wearing the fine suit, seedier dives wearing his normal clothes) and gambling using the jewellery as a medium of exchange.  Even in the worst case scenario he'll just lose some hot items, and in a better case he might end up exchanging some or all of it for cash and making a few florins along the way.

((Lucky you, as there was no Glass–Steagall Act.))

I decided to separate Investment from Commercial bank business, though, since this would be the most interesting part of your game.

[1] You know what is forthcoming. No extra funds, unless you wanted to make a bank run more likely. You have to make do with your 5 florins.
[5] A part-owner of a warehouse, who is old, and childless, decided not to pass on his rights on a waterfront warehouse to his third cousin twice removed, who is the next in line to inherit his property. He would like to sell his shares for 3f. You'd own a quarter of the warehouse, and you will bear a quarter of its gain or losses.

Please decide how you are going to run your commercial bank.

(Run the bank on normal for liabilities and risky for one quarter then return to normal for bills of exchange. Only accept customers who can keep their promises. We can't go risking too much right now )

"Hmm 3 florins for a quarter of a warehouse...Well we can always buy-off the rest of the building later and the man's going to die soon anyway, why not oblige him? I'll visit the man myself and buy his shares. Your in charge as until I come back Selima."

Mahiveno put on his coat and rode for the man's house hoping to buy up his shares. He would speak kindly and politely.

"Ain't I always in charge?" Selima said as Mahi left.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Action- Purchase the man's shares. Also find out who else owns the warehouse and see if they're selling. Show no intentions of buying; we can't afford any more ourselves.

Why in the world would Carrera still come at us? We've 4 professional strength regiments to their 4 nebulous-strength regiments, and we have a fort! Ah well, it's going to be a slaughter. Stupid bankers, we'll show them when I suddenly usher in the communist revolution.

"What do you think, sir?"
"Who's the advisor here, Julian? What do you think?"
"I think that this fort will play a very small role in geopolitics."
"You're a military genius Julian. Send for horses for the nobles, which would cost 4f, but we'll acquire them from Oriana de Lia. ((That should bring up their strength to 5 +1 heavy, +1 Cavalry, +1 Open Terrain.))"
"Do you really feel the need to say 'parenthesis' when you speak?"
"Quiet comma Julian period Then, set get Bard's archers into the fort, stop him from scouting more, they're already coming to siege, and we need everyone in arms. Tactics... are going to be a sparse after that. I don't imagine that we could hide all our cavalry behind the fort? When they come, they shall only see Bard, and they'll charge at him to limit the amount of Morwood's archery will dive into their ranks, and when they begin the charge at what they see is a tiny force, they shall be crushed underneath the hooves of our glorious cavalry. However, if the men see polearms, which should be obvious from the sticks bobbing up and down, they are to get off their horses and fight an infantry battle, but they are not to charge until the last moment to maximize the effect of our expert archers. These orders are to be communicated to the nobles before the action occurs, but if something unforeseen happens, then everyone simply charges into the enemy's ranks. That should do it."
"My, my, sir, you've surprised me. I would've simply used our obvious advantage in numbers and crushed them like a bug."
"We still will, and then we'll liberate the people of Carrera from the corrupt bourgeoisie that has taken hold there."
"Sir, we're the bourgeoisie."
"No, we're the temporary government that must take control until communism is ready."
"In what, 12 hundred years?"

[4]As customary (and to know who point the finger of blame), they have actually arranged a meeting with you. They suggested that they could be selling, but you are careful not to indicate any willingness to buy: at least for the moment.
[3]Turn out everyone had a reason to sell. This warehouse is not terribly profitable; it only receives a total 4f in income each year, which your share comes in 1d4=4 Winter.

You'll know how well (or unwell) your bank is running once it hits Autumn. Please note that you nominally have 50f in liabilities; if your business fails, you will be hold personally responsible. There was no bankruptcy law; you are liable for your debts forever, and you would be put in a debtor's prison until your somebody ransoms you.

Send for horses for the nobles, which would cost 4f, but we'll acquire them from Oriana de Lia. ((That should bring up their strength to 5 +1 heavy, +1 Cavalry, +1 Open Terrain.))"

Conflicting orders: 1-3 to Bard, 4-6 to George. [4] As the troops are marshaled inside the fort, George did slipped a few men over the palisade, rappelling their way. [2] Unfortunately they failed to give any meaningful estimate of forces, so you continue with your plans unchanged.
[2] As they are preparing for a siege - this is becoming more important since they now know Prince George and his men are inside - you now know how much men they have. Their force is at 2 Noble Heavy Cavalry (4x2) and 2 Levy Infantry(1x2).
Meanwhile, your forces are 1 Household Heavy Cavalry(4), 2 Noble Heavy Cavalry(4x2), plus Bard's force of 1 Professional Archers(2).
[1] Critical Failure. Perhaps it is a bad idea to solely rely on the countercharge. Bard's troops, knowing they are used as baits, did fire a few volleys, before their cavalry come too close and they attempted retreated into the fort. After all, they are Mercenaries, and their willingness to throw their lives should not be overestimated. The result was chaotic. As the archers are retreating, the cavalry are already hot on their tail, slaying a few men who were too slow to escape. Your nobles, meanwhile, rushed out to cover the retreat (without your orders, of course), but the door is becoming a bottleneck. You are now on the receiving end of a charge. (Attack roll +2 for the first turn. Professional Archers cannot react on 1st turn since they are not yet in position to fire. Plains bonus negated due to cramped terrain.)

Round 1: Carrera attacks Lencil, outsides fort door
[4+4+1+1+2]+[6]=18 v [4+4+4]+[1]=13
The Carreran Knights crashed into your fort door. 1 Noble Heavy Cavalry Destroyed on Lencillian side.
Round 2: Carrera attacks Lencil, at the gates of the fort
[4+4+1+1]+[5]=15 v [4+4+(2+1)]+[1] = 12
The ensuring melee is chaotic, with casulties on both sides. Please select your unit.
[5]The free company arrived, and are now attacking the back of the Carreran troops! After all, they still see themselves as Lencillians, and they are now fighting to protect their homeland!

((Seriously, this castrophe could be avoided if 1. You used levies to soak up damage 2. You make use of the free company, by bribing them. I saved your ass by magically putting them there, but please consider your strategy a bit more carefully next time.))

I have to point out that I have 0f to do anything, and unfortunately, The archers are worth the least. Sorry firelordsky, I'll get you back for this. The Professional Archers

I kind of assumed we would steamroll them, seeing as we have much higher strength than them.
