I dunno, I think that as of now assigning war animals to the military is not a good choice at all, as has been said they go down pretty quickly against armed fouls, the problem is that they are treated as pets, which means that if you assign 3 warbeasts to 1 military dwarf, and they all go down at once on a siege, the chances of that dwarf going berserk are very high, especially since the military seems so hard to keep happy with the stupid "enrage by long patrol duty" thing even when they have plenty of off time.

Also as of now war animals will also retreat to a burrow set to a civ alert, so if you want to send them with your army while keeping your civilians safely inside you have to manually assign every single civilian dwarf to a burrow, which won't prevent stupid cats from walking right into a squad of goblins and getting killed making lots of dwarves unhappy...

One use they have is for disposing of captives, which again is not the better option because you'd rather have your military taking care of them to speed up their skill gain, or you could just pasture a whole bunch of em on a strategic position to distract the enemy while your military assembles and then send them to clean up.

I did had a war tiger putting a wrestling lock and breaking a axelord's elbow once, that was cool.

Put all the apes in a room full of upward spears, invaders must enter this room. When a lever is pulled the room is sealed, the spikes go up and the room fills with lava for burning stabbed hell apes of doom.
