Your manipulator array blurs into action, rapidly scraping at the steel to remove thin flakes and slivers and piling them to the side. Once a sufficient pile has been gathered, the manipulators compress the material into a portable cube. You somehow feel like you now have enough steel, but you're not sure what it is enough for. Everything is a bit vague, and you're operating mostly on preprogrammed subroutines... something you might call 'instinct'.

The removal of the steel has left a small gouge in the endless steel surface. The twisted bundles of copper surrounded by insulating polymer are still present, as is a small steel cube.

After assembling the small cube of steel, you pause for a moment and consult your internal datastores. You know how to build a "Nano-Assembler X01" which is the same model as you. To build one you will need a structural material, such as the steel you have gathered, a good conductive material and a semiconductor of some sort. Your logis array suggests copper, silver or gold as the conductive metal and silicon, carbon or germanium. You will also need a very small amount of silicon and carbon to construct a static energy harvesting array to power the new assembler.

After consulting your scanning array you find that some of the contaminants on the steel surface contain carbon in usable forms.
