Adamantine Bolts
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:40:25 pm »

From what i've read they're supposed to be completely useless, at least in 40d, which is astonishingly what i'm still playing.

I just had a woodcutter turned marksdwarf use an adamantine crossbow and some adamantine bolts to take out a fire imp that was stopping the dwarves from leaving the fort, he was completely untrained and killed it in a single shot.

So what's so terrible about adamantine bolts?

I think the higher the weight, the better they can penetrate armor. Imps obviously don't have armor so you don't need heavy bolts.
Pure speculation though :P

There was !!SCIENCE!! done about this. Heavy bolts are actually worse, since they are a lot slower than lighter ones.

Oh, all i've read is that adamantine bolts are supposed to be terrible, but then, inexperienced marksdwarf takes down a fire imp before it can set him on fire.

Didn't seem so terrible to me, that's all. :p

Also, my dwarves just spontaneously named a nearby gremlin, does this have any significance?

I recall franti finding out that slade bolts are extremely powerful.

Dwarven .50 cal rifles, anyone?

Nope, dwarves name intelligent creatures that live in map features (like chasms and stuff).

I think everyone is missing the part where he said he's still running .40d, which was before the material/damage rewrite.

In .40d adamantine was the best material for everything, including hammers and bolts, because material properties didn't matter at all. So it's no surprise you killed the fire imp in one hit.

(also fire imps are small, weak creatures anyway, but that's beside the point)

The material with bolts is almost totally irrelevant as they travel so fast anyways. An elite goblin archer can headshot a dwarf through fortifications AND an adamantine helmet with a copper arrow. Easily. I use adamantine bolts for my crossbows and they kill goblins through their armour with laughable ease (although amusingly enough can't penetrate the clothes of the Trolls they bring, instead chipping bones and bruising muscle and organs--hopefully when the Chaos warriors show up they can get through their armour too). They also shred bigger creatures (with the above exception, obviously).

Since we're on the topic of ammunition...

Does a bolt with a really high fixed temp [raw-edited] set things on fire that it hits?

*imagines flaming slade crossbow bolts...* then
embarking with a crew of marksmen in a 7x7 area of terrifying area...

epic.

It would first set your dwarf and the quiver it's in on fire then everything else, but go ahead, have !!FUN!!

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

Then I'll just have to edit the raws to make fireproof dwarves and fireproof quivers...

but that wouldn't be hard...

EDIT:

just saved my fortress game and am going to attempt to make this happen.
