I was following DF for awhile before I signed up to the forums. I'm pretty sure I signed up before .40 showed up, but honestly, I can't remember the exact details of the state of the game when I signed up.

That dates back to v 0.21.104.21, or thereabouts.  I probably played before joining the forums, but not too long before.

Man, I remember when worldgen took an hour, if you were lucky.

40d-er here.

I love how he just wanted to know who had been here since the beginning and everyone hopped on to go, "NOT ME!"  ;D

I was playing Dwarf Fortress for about a month before registering, though.

I started playing DF around the end of the 2d version but only registered a forum account in the last few years.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

I consider myself pretty old on the forums, but I've only been here a couple of years. Guess I'm just one of those 12 year olds wearing lipstick and high heels to get into clubs.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

My first memory of Dwarf Fortress was adventure mode in some town with a temple, were I was frustrating of trying to get my god to say something to me by praying, and then watching elephants start murdering priests.

Though I only really got into it at .18 with aimed attacks, I started playing Adventure Mode but then I started trying Fortress Mode too, and quickly learned. A while after that I started frequently going to the forums.

Dwarven Science: We do what we must, because, we're bored.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

I think I started playing DF not too long after the z-axis was created and joined the forums soon afterward.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

IIRC the first version I played (I joined the forums a month or 2 later) was .38a or b. A few months after the z-axis was added, but before there was worldgen history.

When I first started playing you could only dig right, farms disappeared in winter and two floodgates and a lever were all that was required to flood the world with magma.

Fun times. Too bad the dwarves were so stupid back then. Almost impossible to get any work done, they were constantly eating, drinking or sleeping and moved incredibly slowly.

I never understood the two-floodgate thing.  All you ever needed was one floodgate and a channel.  The second (or rather the first, if you are counting from the fluid source) just created that requisite channel for you.  and it was easier to just dig one without bothering with the extra gate and mechanisms.

Howdy.  I guess I'm an oldbie then if you go by been around since the 2D version.  Theres folks older than me I'm sure though.  Folks that have been around since Armok 1 was the main game of the site.

I've got an '06 date, but the time is 12:01:01, which I think is an artifact of the changeover.
