Amber/Coral !!SCIENCE!!
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:11:44 pm »

Has anyone tried to figure out what, and in what forms, amber and/or coral are in Dwarf Fortress? In vanilla aside from custom reactions not needed to get the amber/coral and stuff unrelated to amber/coral, of course, custom reactions could let you summon demon leather and sandstone from an amber amulet and a coral crown.

I modded in some magic geese that laid amber and coral blocks, and then build a megaproject out of amber and coral.  They acted just like any other building material, aside from some annoyance as my dwarves refused to put them in block stockpiles due to stockpiles lacking amber and coral material options.

As far as I know, the only way to see them without modding is by meeting a forgotten beast made of amber or coral.  Non-flesh forgotten beast remains can't be used for anything anyway, so there's not anything you can do with the material.

Obviously blocks, but has anyone seen if they count as stone/bone/gems/etc and so reactions to make amber/coral boulders/???/gemstones/etc create useable materials.

Amber and coral have been in the game since, well, forever - they were there in the old 2D versions, and Human civilizations actually made crafts out of them (you could request them from their merchant nobles and buy them from their caravans, or you could explore undead ruins in Adventurer mode and pick them up off the ground).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Alright, but is it possible to make rocks or whatever of amber or coral with a custom reaction and have them made into rock crafts or whatever at a craftsdwarfs workshop?

Probably not, since they don't seem to be defined as stone-type materials.  It's pretty easy for you to test this out yourself though.
