Catching Live Fish
« on: August 16, 2011, 12:54:01 pm »

Ok so I'm trying to catch some live fish to put in an aquarium and pond but when I assign the job the trapper just sits there over the animal trap and doesn't even go toward the water.

I have fishing zones set up and I have animal traps, is it a bug?

I...I don't think that's how it works. I could be wrong though.

You might not have any fish to catch.

IIRC, to catch a live fish, the trap needs to be made of glass (i.e. it's a fishtank, not a bear trap).  I could be wrong, though.

Do you mean vermin fish (like lungfish) or creature fish (like carp)?

Only turtles and moghoppers can be captured, to do so, build an animal trap at the edge of a river and bait it with meat or a plant. Be warned however, said food will rot.

However it's bugged, once the vermin is caught they become an item and the vermin themselves rot if they are transferred into a new tank.

In order to catch non-vermin fish you need cage traps.

I think you need a fisherdwarf instead of a trapper to catch vermin type fish.  Keep an eye on him so he doesn't start fishing instead.

How does one go about setting up cage traps in water?

Build the cage traps, flood the hallway. +dwarf points if you make a way to drain the water for repeated use.

You must declare a fishing zone if you want to capture live fish. For some stupid reason, they aren't smart enough to just head to the nearest body of water.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

A good method is to build a large channel along the side of the body of water, flush the water through cage traps, and pump the excess water elsewhere.
I'd look into the Sea Serpent breeding program.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Know I haven't posted in a while and these ideas are useful and intended to be used. Especially against the merfolk.... and their useful skulls....
