Or maybe it's more well known?

Having played both, I'd say X3 is superior to Freelancer in every way
They clearly are diferent, in the way you control your ship :
Freelancer is arcade, created to be playable with a mouse.
X3 is a simulation, playable with a mouse because of the slower pace, and the fact that you won't control the ship as a place (as in Freelancer), but by orders.

I fly the ship with a mouse in X3 just fine.

yes, you can.
The thing is :
 - in Freelancer, you control the ship as if it were a plane game, but a mouse is better than a joystick.
 - in X3, you control the ship with the mouse, because it's slow paced, and most or the movements are made by orders.

@ Dsarker : Freelancer simply Needed no joystick support.

That's wrong. Freelancer simply had no joystick support.

I disagree about the slow pace in dogfights.

Of course, in some of the ridiculous campaign events in Freelancer, where 5 million enemies were throwing massive quantities of firepower around, my strategy consisted of turning on the cruise drive and going into a vertical roll until the game decided I had survived long enough and I was allowed to escape the battle now. It was virtually impossible to be hit while doing that, as nobody could predict my movement (not even missiles) (which is funny, because I was always in the same loop at the same exact location, so just firing a constant beam there would have hit me repeatedly - but they couldn't do that because they weren't that smart and probably didn't have beam lasers).

Sorry for get this topic back from dead but since I play EV Nova I'm always looking for similar games like it, I think the genre of EV Nova is something called space opera/Star Sonata (maybe somebody can point the right genre of these games are) and not 4x space game, recently I found this game 3030 Deathwar http://crunchyleafgames.itch.io/3030-deathwar and it's similar to the game mentioned in this topic (That IMHO remains unanswered).
also similar games in 3D are Elite series, X3 Series, Freelancer, Space Rangers(2D)

EV Nova its unique in it's style
- 2D (don't like 3D games in general)
- Space exploration
- Some RPG elements
- upgrades

You can download 3030 DeathWar for free and if you want you can donate to the developers

3D is okay I guess, but i'm more looking for games like SPAZ where you take direct control over one ship, and plays a little bit like an RPG. (eg, level up your skills, get better ships over time,...), not a RTS game where you control massive army's and micromanage and micromanage the (ehum, please forgive me) **** out of everything.

EDIT: also, I just found this game: Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space which vaguely match my criteria, does anyone know if it's any good?

Amazingly fun.  Fast and casual, play a game in 15-60 minutes depending on how you play.  Light weight, but high replay value.

There is a sequel currently in early-access which I threw in for, but I'm waiting for it to be a little more mature before installing.

On the EV:Nova angle, there is NAEV which is an open source spiritual successor to EV:Nova.  Though not fully complete it is still playable.  Lots of fun.

Starsector is in alpha, but it is still fun to play.  2D with all the elements you asked for.

Similar games are classics like Starcontrol and SC2.  Also Starflight (you can get 1&2 on GOG) and this sweet Starflight remake:  https://sites.google.com/site/starflighttlc/downloads

This is a good topic, thanks for bringing it back and linking to Deathwar.
