So what kind of pets do people have?

I've got:
Aziz the Araby Fighting Weasel
Doug the Gold Fish
Munin the Philosophical Raven Advisor
Bruno the Burly Assistant
Rodney the Dark-Carapaced Crustacean
Tiberius the Disgraced Rattus Faber Bandit Chief
Nobu the Salt Weasel
Rufus the Disappointing Marsh Wolf

Had a large number of Talkative Rattus Faber, but they had to die for the cause....

My Mystic Raven Adviser is named Nevermore because I'm uncreative.

My bats and lizards are nameless because they're legion. My weasels are nameless because they've been known to pop, and it's best not to get attached. My assorted L.B.s are nameless because they're reticent, tight-lipped blighters (even the talkative ones). My haunted-looking hound is nameless because there are no words for such misery. My newly acquired crustacean is nameless because it's not bothered to change that yet. My partisan tortoise is nameless because that would be telling.

OTOH, my cheerful little goldfish is named Best Forgotten, to keep her memory fresh. My devious raven is named Unspoken Insinuation for reasons best not mentioned. And my public - my dear beloved public - answers to Raving Bonhomie, when they can be bothered to answer at all.

I'm still accepting cats (Ronald Miasma). Perhaps this is a special box...

It's a wicked game, sir, and I won't be part of it.

The code for 22nd December was "midnightmatriarchy", which suggests there might be something other than a spider or cat in that box...
edit: However, I already purchased the midnight matriarch pet the other week. Who would like to be sent my cat-in-a-box to test my "special box" theory?

If you've still got it, I've heard a certain Mr. - ah,  Mrs. - uh, a certain Vide would be willing to accept such a parcel.

[Edit: I'd immediately thought your theory to be ridiculous, because really, would they be handing out matriarchs like penny-candy? But then I opened today's window and found a Rat of Glory, so...]

I already sent the perhaps-special-cat-in-a-box to a certain Akylon. His parcel contained the standard spider, whether it was an advent calendar derived parcel is yet to be established. In other gifting news, I have sent a surprise package to Theodolus, which I am assured is rather unlikely to do something horrible.

So here's an interesting little option:
Quote
Benefit from flattery at Dante's Grill Purchase dinner for a rising star; allow them to flatter you in public; and take advantage of their temporary fame. This will reduce their Wounds and Suspicion, and allow you to drain a substantial amount of their Making Waves, like a particularly friendly vampire. Consider using it on players who are not yet Persons of Some Importance and who aren't using Making Waves. You may wish to search for suitable players to send Calling Cards to, using the Send a Calling Card action.
I'm collecting making waves at the moment - if anyone doesn't need their making waves and would like wounds and suspicion reduced, let me know and I'll send you an invitation.

I'd be totally fine with doing so.
