I wonder if we could have an Exceptional Friend thread...

1) How fast will I hit the option for fate-locked content if I start playing?
Almost instantly after the tutorial, though it is completely optional. I haven't paid a penny and feel I haven't missed too much so far.

2) Is the game still locked down to same-platform friends?
To my knowledge, no.
I became an exceptional friend after a couple weeks to get the second candle, but it's really not necessary.  Heck it would probably be tiresome, to the extent that I used those inefficient 3-5 turn moves a lot over the holidays to kill turns :P
With a $7 exceptional friendship I did get to experience two separate "exceptional stories".  The Persona Engine was... neat.  Not really a lot of content, but pretty nifty writing.  I haven't played much of the current month's yet.

As for same-platform, I really doubt it.  I initially logged in via Google but I don't think my friends did, and later it seamlessly let me choose a password.  Now I can log in via Google or by email+password (which lets me play on the free mobile app).

Also uh, PTW.  Reminder for me to catch up on this thread.  I think I'm far enough that I won't have my early-game spoiled by anything.  Recently hit 100 shadowy, despite dabbling a lot in Watchful and Persuasive.

Not to shill the Exceptional Friend content, but in my defense I did damn The Persona Engine with faint praise...  It was short and didn't seem to actually build much, except the Great Game *maybe*.

I really enjoyed the 12:15 to Moloch, the second story I got for my $7 (along with the second candle).  Though maybe that's because it's about a train to Hell...  And watchful (not that the skillchecks were high enough to matter, of course).

I feel like the game does have plenty of free content, particularly if you can carry the mobile app around to burn turns.  Naturally it's bound to get boring eventually, but I'm not close to there yet.  Probably helps that two of my friends (possibly three now) enjoy discussing the mysteries.  They got me in via our tabletop group.

But, at least as a person of very little importance/newbie, the second candle is probably worth more than the neat story.  It makes it more expedient to experience the massive bulk of free content.

Uh gotta keep this brief.
This game is probably best to play with friends, or even just remote online contacts.  Because so often you'll be tempted to check the wiki, and I have a few times.  But it's a lot better to just check with others, who have either experienced the line or checked the wiki themselves, and they provide hints.

The game is pretty great about suggesting new friends, I got a handful just from recording notable events in my """private""" journal.

There's one rule, and I doubt most people hold to it:  If you perform a social action... think of something original to put in the box.

Fallen London is the best. I'm trying to unlock Flute Street and get a zubmarine.

Can anyone tell me what a destiny is?
I just started a few days ago and today I accidentally started the process of choosing one, without realizing it was something that couldn't be changed easily. I looked into it slightly and figured out which one I actually wanted, but I think I've already locked myself out of it. I chose "a silvered future" and seem to be unable to back out.

Any idea what I should do?

It'll cost you 25 FATE to change your destiny and can only be done during certain festivals, the next being Fruits of the Zee in August.

Luckily it isn't massively important, the stat boosts are negligible.

I don't actually have the destiny yet... I only have "The Mark of Destiny" on my page. Is there anything at all I can do to revisit the earlier choice before proceeding? Apparently I'm blocked from using items, and can't return to the normal area...

Even if it's not that important mechanically, I'm extremely frustrated right now...

I'm pretty sure you have to proceed once you start down the path of acquiring one.

Bleh.

Ended up getting the "Gleam" one. Do they ever have any further story or anything attached to them? I was expecting something more when I picked it...

Not that I've seen in about a year of having the same destiny, but as I play the the game without referring to wikis it's fully possible I've just missed those options.

I think it's just a little hint at the far off future and (with gleam, at least) a tie in to Sunless Skies.

Edit:  I got Authority, which also seemed related to Sunless Skies (at least, the route by which I got it).

From what I could tell, it's one of those things you're not expected to really understand.  I chose some options that sounded nice, and got a destiny that I wouldn't have really picked.  The journey was pretty neat and it hasn't come up again since.

Heck, it actually turned out to be fortuitous, since Dangerous is the last thing I need to raise to become a person of some importance...

I'm currently on the last leg of Ambition:  Light Fingers.  I hope it pays off, because d___ this questline has been *expensive*, particularly in glim and candles.  And, mm, two of the places it makes you visit.  Pretty neat, though.  Next time my turns recharge, I think I'll have it...

Actual question:  What's a convenient way to get sapphires and rubies?  Sorta frustrating since I had a few, but sold them, and didn't even get much.  I think from doing various shadowy things...  I'd like to get the bejewelled cane from the keen-eyed lapidary.  Partly because it looks super shiny, if useless, but also because I donated like 1600 glim to her already and dangit I want something for my money.

As for the wikia, I check it occasionally (mostly for stuff my character should already know, like how to get things I've already gotten a lot).  It's so incredibly slow that it almost doesn't even feel like cheating!

Once you're a POSI there's a location where you can trade cryptic clues for gems.

And yeah, I kinda like that my destiny doesn't fully match up with my vision of my character.  It's a destiny, not a choice, right?
