I am proud to serve in the shroud, and hope that you join me in its glorious ranks, rather then the ranks of those who serve those reprobate bats.

Is there a play off both sides option?

You can play for the shroud, or you can play for the glass.
Or, you can betray either (although I have no clue how that works out), although I am unsure how that works out, but I can fairly confidently say that you cannot play both sides.

To be honest, I would choose the glass, even though I did shroud, their grand illusion seems pretty neat (which you can observe as part of the shroud), although that is all I will divulge about its specifics.
EDIT: Does anyone have any clue what the things in/controlling the mirrors are?
You don't have to say in any detail, although saying how to access a storyline that says something about that would be nice.

Sweet, found a pretty easy task that gives london street signs - seeling at 2.5 echoes a pop, per action, that's even better returns than my previous source of street signs (which was working my way up to stealing the full bag of 30 in the flit)

What?

Also, this just in: Action cap removed permanently!

I am a proud member of the Glass. Those filthy Shrouds should be ashamed of themselves! At least we don't claim to present truths to the audience, while you go and try to convince your customers you are truly communicating with dead loved ones. For shame! :P

As far as playing both sides, you can do that up to a certain point after which they force you to make a definite choice.

I would be interested in where that london street sign job is at as well.

There's a card that lets you grab a London street sign. I've also traded about 20 points of society connection for four street signs - not really worth it..

But... you could just do the street sign mission at the University 4 times. That seems like a BIG waste.

Yeah, one of the missions in the university, available like... 4 times a semester? Each time you do it it lets you net a street sign. I forget exactly which one it was, I'll get back to you on it. Since if you're pumping Watchful you'll probably go through at least a few semesters, it's definitely the best way to get street signs.

Ah, here it is:
The Feast of the World - Discuss business.

Oh, that is a pretty nice action.
Unfortunately, I (and a few others of us as well) are already far past that section of the university.
And since you can only do it like 4 actions out of 30 or 40, it is still sub-optimal for echo grinding (although I suppose if you need lots of street signs for some reason then it would be fine, and it is far better then all the other term passing choices at that level).

Except, of course, you'll be needing to spend plenty of time Watchful grinding sooner or later anyways. The big point here is that it's a lot better than any of the alternatives at that step, and you can actually get pretty damn good reward for the rest of the "grinding" by hopping around properly. (About an echo a task for every point up to that one, which isn't too terrible)

Though, actually - are Street Signs good for much? I have like 30 of the things at this point. Do I need to collect them for anything or should I just sell them?

While it's possible that you might need them at some point in the future, I haven't seen a single use for them besides using one to unlock the path to the forgotten quarter.
And they do fetch quite a good price too.

Not like I have anything left to buy that costs less than like 450 echoes...

Also, I was JUST about to buy that fucking ship dwelling when they completely changed the cost. Do you know how many stupid missions I had to do to get enough whispered secrets? And then they can and change it to something completely unrelated? ARGH.

Will I need these whispered secrets for anything else now or can I dump those too?

Yup, it was - I decided to try it out to see if it was worth it.

It actually worked out well for me - I was about 1000 secrets short of the original cost, but had just enough appalling secrets to convert into tales of terror for the new cost.

I think you can dump the secrets if you want, you can get more pretty fast if you ever need to (since the primary place spend them (mainly the bazaar sidestreets) no longer use them.

And you will need to buy the 450 echo stuff eventually once you reach the stat cap (eg. for stuff that need a 140 shadowy but 120 is the regular limit (I think), so you have to have at least 20 points of shadowy bonuses), so you better get cracking.
That said, regular stat grinding is still far more efficient and better then echo grinding.

Is prisoner's honey any use? Because I have about 1000 laying around on my new character, and want to know if I should keep it, or trade it for Romantic Notions.
