ROFL...yeah, Shadow President is not a game where you can use blunt force very often. FYI: NEVER actually conquer Iraq. If you take possession of it, the Soviets will nuke you. Because y'know....that sort of scenario was unthinkable back in 1991. 

Most of the game will tend to be killing with a thousand paper cuts--diplomatic actions, supplying rebels, triangulating with natural enemies of a hostile state, etc.

Oh, and look at using trade as a weapon. Opening up trade/granting Most Favored Nation status typically has huge economic effects on the target country, while trade embargoes tend to cripple weaker states.

Turkey in my game would disagree with you. I attacked Iraq when they attacked Kuwait, and for some reason Turkey took them over instead of me.

That makes sense. Turkey taking Iraq doesn't disrupt the balance of power. The US taking a major landbase right on the Soviet border does.

Actually, the US taking just about any country on the Soviet border will trigger nukes. Even a few major African countries like Egypt can trigger nukes. I think I took Somalia one time without triggering WWIII, but my approval was in the dumps and of course, Somalia was a massive drain on the budget because of the cost of maintaining troops.

Grant MFN status to Japan, then strongly encourage their nuclear program and military spending. Then do the same with South Korea and Isreal.

I kinda remember this game.  IIRC to keep from annoyingly failing nearly all the time, you have to grind your Leader Effectiveness Rating up to 90+.  You need to look at the attributes that increase/decrease with the success or failure of each type of action.   I think the one that raised LER also on failure dropped popular approval or something similar.  So you need to find *another* action that generally raises popular approval without dropping something vital to compensate.  Then spam a mix of the 2 actions until LER is high enough.   THEN you can go to work on your agenda, remembering to fix LER whenever it drops.

I remember after several game months of spamming something like "exchange cultural envoy" and such with other blue team countries I was able to get the US economy crazy high, and the rest of the blue team pretty pumped.  Also I had USSR and China practically disarmed including nukes, and my military super high tech.  Then I started invading red team countries, and conquered about 30 before it got too repetitive - I was gonna do the whole world, but there's a LOT of countries.   I don't remember if I had to disarm France and UK first - probably, 'cause I had lost a ton of games first to France throwing nukes at me for using harsh language to some random country.
