I may or may not have invaded and conquered Cuba, with or without a reason. It's... actually not horrible. Their economy and their QoL have skyrocketed, and for some reason Mongolia has become interested in me.

But I want to give them their freedom back since they're draining my popularity, bigtime.

Nations flip world teams according to their ideology at the start of the new year. Also new World Team Alliances are formed when a nation of a certain ideology becomes a Super Power. If South Africa became a Super Power, then all Imperialist countries would become part of the South Africa WTA. If India becomes a Superpower, all Nationalist states become part of the India WTA. The only two ideologies which can't start a new World Team Alliance are Zionism & Developing Capitalism. Both are firmly aligned with Capitalism.

As for the countries you occupied, how close are you to the New Year? Normally I wait until then to cut them loose. Though you will want to keep troops in their country since I seen a freed country go years without trying to rebuild. Last thing you want is for China to recommunize the Soviet Union after you fought for several ingame months to turn them Capitalist.

Not too certain about that. In my current game, thanks to many talks of increasing diplomatic relations, Finland, Sweden, & Hungary had temporarily joined the US World Team Alliance despite still being Socialist.

Well, all Zionist, Developing Capitalist, and Capitalist nations aren't automatically part of the US WTA, nor are all Communist nations part of the Soviet WTA. Ideology is very powerful for WTA affiliation, but it isn't everything.

Well, from what I can tell, the creator wanted to illustrate the Sino-Soviet Split and the France's dramatic role reduction in the NATO Alliance. Obviously the creator added some sort of key to make this possible. Even taking control of France won't bring them into the US WTA the following year.

And I have seen what you mean about ideology not always being everything. In my current game, the communist republics of Zaire and North Korea, for some unexplained reason, exited the Soviet WTA despite still being communist. This did allow me to help reunite the Korean Peninsula without starting World War Three.

Huh? Was did the US become Communist or the USSR become Capitalist? You have a screenshot of this?

I do not have a screenshot, it was an old game I wasn't recording. The US is always Capitalist as far as I can tell. For an ideology change to happen there would have to be a coup, and that would mean you dying.

I vaguely recall that the USSR became Centrist, but I'm not certain.

Yeah, when Cuba took over America, I was killed. That occurred the following year after China nuked me for nuking Iraq for invading Kuwait.

Here is a basic summary of that game:

August 2, 1990: Iraq invades Kuwait. The US threatens military and nuclear retaliation, but Saddam is not swayed. The United States nukes Iraq with several missiles, then invades and forces Iraq to surrender the very same day.

August 3, 1990: China nukes the United States. The United States nukes China... and takes out their worldwide nuclear capabilities!

Rest of 1990: US withdraws all troops from overseas, then invades Mexico which brings popularity back up to non-impeach levels.

Start of 1991: The United States is now a Third World Country with police state level of Restricted. China is on Soviet WTA and has its nuclear reach is only regional. Germany has become a superpower and every Capitalist state except the US, Canada, & France are on the Germany WTA. France too is a superpower and is the leader (and only member!) of the France WTA.

January-February 1991: The US decides to take over all of North America bit by bit. Also I used lots of surgical strikes on Cuba and Libya to bring my leadership and popularity back up. That provoked the Cuban invasion while I was busy taking over Canada. I first experimented with what would happen if I was taken over. Then I reverted to save and took over Cuba. Since I successfully defended America and took over Cuba in the same turn, my polls shot up to 100%

Apparently not. Iraq wasn't on the Soviet WTA so they could really care less. China and France (both non-aligned states) do tend to retaliate for a fellow non-aligned state when it is nuked. By the way, the Soviet Union WTA is now "Green" instead of "Pink". Guess that means that Communism is now the most powerful ideology.
