Starting up my own blog
« on: August 15, 2011, 03:53:01 pm »

Not sure whether I should put this in Life Advise or not but I have set up my own blog. I want to know whether anyone else has done this and how they got publicity for it/ how they get followed etc.

I'm doing this for my own entertainment and also to hone my writing skills, since I want to become a Journalist in the future ( I just came back from work experience with PCGamer UK last week).

Also, take this as an opportunity to publicize your own blog I know I will

I have a crappy livejournal with mathematical homosexual fanfiction romance stories on it.

Mostly, I became followed because I went Beyond The Impossible in terms of surrealism.  I quit updating, though, because there wasn't a good community to be part of.

It sounds like you were part of a niche group anyway...

I was mostly trolling the Hetalia fandom.  It wasn't like I was very serious about it.

I had a blog, but I realised that I'm neither interesting, clever, attractive or actually good at anything

Well you're rather experienced in self-depreciation, although I don't know if that's a good basis for a blog...

I practice self depreciative humour, but I'm not very good at it. *rimshot*

I have a crappy livejournal with mathematical homosexual fanfiction romance stories on it.

Mostly, I became followed because I went Beyond The Impossible in terms of surrealism.  I quit updating, though, because there wasn't a good community to be part of.

For some reason I don't understand, many of my close female friends (about five) all write homosexual fanfiction. Naturally, they wanna talk to me about it, something to do with "using me as a reference for characters :P."

The thing about a Blog, is that you need flexible centralized themes, yes themes: two, or perhaps three related areas. You need areas to focus your content that will direct you but not limit you. Having multiple areas gives you room to work with if one of the others fails on content or you lose interest in that area. If you can at all organize the post archives by subject matter, kudos.

Post organization is also keen, one of the better models I've seen done, is to get out a notebook, or blank microsoft word document and go nuts writing whatever comes to mind, no matter how stupid it may seem. Later, once everything is out, organize it and prune out some of the stuff you don't think you'll use. This can lead to multiple postings and better organized single posts. Updates are also key if your topic is subject to that, keep tabs on your area--this provides update material.

As for publicity, one word: interesting. Take a look at her: http://www.hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

Well, in this instance the canon has 0 main female characters and 1 fairly-prominent female character, so without teh gay it is very hard to have any romance whatsoever.

*sigh*

Damn you, Hetalia, for making lesbians impossible.

Meh, the thing about fanfic is that it isn't cannon. You do what you want with it :P.

As long as you grasp people's interests, it's all good. Incidentially, I ran across your livestream just now. So far so good.

I keep a semi-blog thread, and I guess that it's always done enough for me (link's in the signature, for those who really care). I've honestly considered moving it out of an actual thread for a very long time, so that I could have posts organized by tags, but I've never felt that it'd hold up by itself. Maybe someday, I suppose.

Hey! I just did this the other day as well with my brother. Me and him are sharing the duties of putting out a daily blog for the next fortnight as a precursor to the longer term view, which we can hopefully keep going (I can write drivel for days, hopefully my brother can keep it up as well and not get too disheartened by the emotional investment in getting words on to paper).

It's pretty contentless stuff, using as a vent for writing more than anything - don't expect to get any major interest (even minor interest) but sometimes - you just need to write. Can't offer any advice though on getting followed - maybe try and build up a twitter personality around the blog - follow some gaming 'names' and butter up a few people that way (any contacts from PC Gamer?). A retweet of a well written piece could get you quite a lot of views pretty fast?

This actually sounds like a good subject for a blog ... ?

Ranma / Hetalia cross-over yuri hentai fanfic? Have one or more of the Hetalia guys get the Jusenkyo curse?, pretty convoluted sorry to say.
