I couldn't agree more! It is a solid game and to be honest I keep going back and forth between JA online and JA BIA

Bump!

The dev's have posted the changelog for the upcoming patch:

http://boards.jaggedalliance.com/index.php?/topic/1734-upcoming-patch/

Including Fog of War:

Quote
• Added tactical mode as option on game start.
- Enemies have to be revealed via line of sight in tactical mode.
- Sound sources are marked in tactical view as well as on the minimap

Sector Inventory:

Quote
• Added sector inventory, accessible via Character Detail Screen
- Always accessible in friendly sectors
- Automatically includes all containers that have been opened and all enemy drops that have been spotted by the player
- Accessible for militia recruitment and trading with NPCs

Camera Scrolling:

Quote
• Camera scrolling possible by moving the cursor to the border of the screen

And a few other fixes including the polnish language.

Quote
• Polnish language added

That's basically all the major criticisms I had with this game fixed.  It should be released around the end of this month, but there's a 40% off weekend deal on steam at the moment

I just saw this at EB, has anyone bought it since release?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I haven't bought it, but I've been following Jef's LP of it. With the new patch and fog of war it seems like it could be cool. Not necessarily a true JA3 but a good game in its own right. I would like to see more games done in this style in the future. However, considering how well this game did at launch I'm not holding my breath. It's a shame too because the plan and go + realtime thing is something that I would enjoy quite a bit. Turn based combat just left too many 'time holes', if you will, especially for a game trying to go for a more realistic approach.

It's quite fun, especially with the new Fog of War.

Has the modding scene picked up at all for it?

As far as I know, these are the 4 major mods

Blue Dawn
http://boards.jaggedalliance.com/index.php?/topic/1278-mod-blue-dawn/

Firearms Rebalanced
http://boards.jaggedalliance.com/index.php?/topic/1241-mod-firearms-rebalanced-experiment/

AIM-Professionals
http://boards.jaggedalliance.com/index.php?/topic/1574-mod-aim-professionals/

Combat Evolved
http://www.moddb.com/mods/ce-mod-jabia

Mod loader/launcher
http://www.moddb.com/mods/sbobovycs-jabia-mods-tools/downloads/jabia-tools-mod-launcher

Except two of those fizzled out last Winter/Spring.  CE is still relatively active however, and includes most if not all of the tweaks of the other mods.  I've never tried AIM Professionals, but it looks respectable.  Also the European modding community is relatively more active, so you may find some other gems if you know Polish, Russian, or German.

Also worth mentioning, the Zombie Mod campaign is based off of CE.
http://jagged-alliance.pl/artykul446/zombie-mod/
(Polish site, but the mod is in English)

I've played CE but I still find Bearspit-modded JA2 more enjoyable.  As much as CE fixes the gameplay mechanics, it can't fix the "soulless" feel of JA:BIA.  For a mod to entirely overhaul the lack of music, voice acting, character art, cutscenes, or plot would require a fully dedicated team.  It's hard to imagine something like that coming together.  Having fixed combat, the guy behind CE is working to import UI, character AI, and music into the game, but I feel like that it just ends up clashing with the existing assets.

Yeah, thats what I was afraid of.  Why the hell did they give it to those incompetents?  So ends a classic series.

I've only briefly played JA2 with a friend years ago, but I always like these kinds of games.

I'm wondering what you'd all recommend to play first; JA2 or BIA? I know if I play one, the other will seem less interesting because I already know about the game, so I want to play the best version first and get as much enjoyment out of learning the game as possible.

JA2 with one of the overhaul mods. Don't even look at BiA, no don't even THINK of BiA. It's terrible.
