No idea about the router, since it's in a freaking wall/ceiling tile for some reason, but none on the computer. No reaction from it at all.

If no lights come on on the port itself when you plug in the cable, then it's a hardware issue. No clue why it would affect your WiFi too, but hey, one step at a time, right?

So, check your laptop and its port on a known good cable. If you don't get any lights on your port there either, then it's your laptop. In which case, it might just be software that's disabled your port. Then again, on a desktop, the port has lights as long as the computer is on the power grid and correctly connected, even if it's off, so...

Second possible culprit is the cable you're using. Test between two known functioning ports.

Third is the router. For this, you're gonna have to go and take a look at the router itself. I assumed you had access to it since you said you rebooted it, but I'm assuming you could only reach the power cord? You're really going to have to go and get this thing into your hands, otherwise, you can't even be sure your cable's properly plugged in.

Sure, except the ethernet adapter worked just fine elsewhere. I've never had trouble with it, and I know both adapters in the laptop still work. The ethernet adapter is definitely not disabled. I've even uninstalled then reinstalled the thing in Device Manager, making sure to get the latest known drivers.

The cable is not the culprit. I've been using it with another computer. The cable, and the router port that it's attached to, are known to be functioning.

Cable isn't the problem, and I rebooted it because this room has a lightswitch that toggles all this room's circuitry, which includes the router. I don't even know where the thing is.

My current guess: Since it's a new router (Netgear n600 WNDR3400), and an old computer with old adapters, perhaps there's a very coincidental incompatibility between the router and both adapters in the laptop. This is strange, but it's the closest-to-reasonable explanation I can come up with.

Only one that makes sense.

No, it's weird : ethernet is retro compatible almost all the time. My best guess would be a dhcp problem. Is your comp configured with a static IP address?

siiiigh

DHCP is running, nothing is set to a static lease, a known working computer (the one I'm on right now) is set to use DHCP, and so is my laptop. The web interface for the router is working fine and I've hard-rebooted it and nothing changed.
