If you let a commoner rule the nation, they might believe that commoners ruling is ok. They might think that just because the Queen was born royal doesn't mean she should stay royal. They might start thinking that those other cities with merchant councils have the right idea.

Exactly. It is a job for a figurehead. For someone who looks the part. Now, I'm sure your bodyguards are wonderful people, but I refuse to believe that they have the requisite skills to rule a nation.

To be clear, if you do put a bodyguard (or some other inappropriate character) on the throne, there will be a roll for public reaction, which could result in a large uprising. Or even the idea that the new guy is a better ruler than Laythe is.

even a paranoid monarch would not put a bodyguard on the throne. Again, its just asking for a palace coup a la Praetorian. but we already discused that. Laythe can do that, but don't expect anyone to sit idly and accept it.

I believe the "throne" or "crown" in question is a legal term and refers to being in capital, not the throne as in the physical object. And it means the mundane day-to-day running of the country which involves signing papers and talking to low-rank officials that Laythe does all the time but isn't shown doing. And you need someone to do that.

Well, the choice is Laythes to make

She can put a no-name flunky on the throne and probably have the people riot, but if that doesn't happen she'll maintain her power quite nicely.

Or, she can randomly trust one of us to not screw up/take over the kingdom while she's gone.

Tala would be great for that! But, we both know how likely that is.

You know, there would be no problem in granting avitus a temporary regency for the period of campaign, seeing that he will be the highrest-ranking civil servant left behind.
Every monarch had a chancellor or majordomus that usually served in such capacity every time king was away on war; it was a fairly standard practice.
Of course if Laythe had a spouse or an appointed chancellor, this would not be an issue.

Unfortunately what rules Avitus out is that he is a noble, which really doesn't give me much room :/

Geez, at this rate I might just be better off knighting Nikepheros and letting him sit on the throne, but then I know he'll turn on me :/

EDIT: Wait, would the queen know if Avitus was of noble birth?

But thats the thing: Nikephoros does not want any official power outside of army. He knows that queen is paranoid, and not having a noble title and being responsibe directly to her makes him trustworthy. And that trust is the only thing that makes this kingdom work (and only barely).

E: I am also running the campaign, I can't stay behind!
