Tristan's an orphan, albeit one with enough drive and talent to surpass the caste system that declared him worthless from birth and work his way up into a position normally occupied by the second or third-born son of noble families. As for Dalannor, the colors are black, gold, and blue, with black normally worn by clergy (hence Tristan saying sacre noir as opposed to sacre bleu), gold by royalty, and blue by the nobility and palace guard. Since your social standing determines what colors you can wear, Tristan wearing blue shows him to be considered of very high standing in Dalannor, about the same as nobility; a fact reinforced by the letter Laythe received noting him as 'like a son' to Lord d'Allemagne. The Dalannori royal emblem is a globe divided in half diagonally (upper left to lower right) with an s-shaped line on a black background. The upper half is gold and the lower is blue with 'holes' in it to show the black background. This is the flag he'll fly over Vale, for the moment. I'm considering selling it to Laythe if it isn't too far away from Ligoria.
