Considering the only safe harbour is there, you'd either be travelling the long way around on poor defensible terrain, or risk an assualt on a heavily defended harbour with about 14 Str defending...

Then I would institute a Noble's council so William wouldn't have to do anything but look pretty and kill people.

Yeah, just sword rattling, its moderately fun to do when I have nothing else to plot or kill.
