Opiates aren't really religous. They are more health use.
They are a depressant, not a upper.
Unless you want a entire religion composed of bunch of depressed addicts..which actually sounds interesting...

Well yes, but they have been used in religious ceremonies. A few tribes in China used to use them and I do believe Greeks had some of them as well. I know certain  Native American tribes used them.
