As i said, it could (and probably should) be ignored. He's doing it to pay army upkeep, which isn't due till next year.

Yeah, see, the thing with that is, most people who have an army also have the facilities needed to maintain that army. He doesn't. Upkeep is an abstraction, which assumes you have access to all the things an army needs, and simply have to pay for their maitenance.

He has a dozen druids and a few hundred hungry peasants, with no place to camp, no food to eat, and no weapons to wield. He needs that upkeep money/resources now, even if he then keeps it until the end of the year and pays it then.
